Monday Recap

Behind a Damian Suarez wonder goal and a late Garry Rodrigues strike—and aided by Raul Baena's sending off after he picked up a second yellow—Elche defeated Rayo Vallecano on Monday, 2-0.
The win was big for Elche, ending a two-game losing streak and vaulting them into 17th place after coming into the day on the bottom of the table. The Elche supporters certainly appreciated the win, as AS English on Twitter noted:
Elche will next face Eibar on Monday, a team currently eighth on the table, while Rayo Vallecano will have to try to recover from this tough loss against a Villarreal that is sixth on the table and has been quite good this year.
Neither team will be looking at an easy match up next, in other words.
Sunday Recap

Barcelona and Athletic Bilbao served up a highly entertaining contest on Sunday, with the Blaugrana emerging as winners after a 5-2 spectacle.
Lionel Messi continued his fine form by opening the score early, and Luis Suarez doubled the Catalans' lead before half-time. Per Squawka Football, no forward has been more productive in 2015 than Messi:
A mad stretch of seven minutes saw four goals in the second half, with Mikel Rico pulling one back for the hosts before an own-goal and a strike from Neymar gave the Catalans a three-goal cushion.
Goal's Ben Hayward likes how Barcelona's all-star front line is starting to click after some early struggles:
Aritz Aduriz made the score 4-2, but any hopes of a Basque comeback were dashed when Xabier Etxeita saw a straight red card for a reckless challenge on Suarez. Replays seemed to confirm the Bilbao man didn't mean to hit the Uruguayan but simply lost track of his opponent, but the tackle was a very poor one, nonetheless.
Pedro added a goal late to put the final score on the board.
Sergio Garcia scored late to set up a frantic finale, but Valencia held on for a 2-1 win over Espanyol thanks to goals from Pablo Piatti and Daniel Parejo.
The visitors didn't look at all impressive but once again walked out with three points, and beIN Sports' David Cartlidge wonders whether the Champions League hopefuls are planning on changing their approach anytime soon:
Getafe shocked Sevilla with a 2-1 win thanks to a late winner from Pedro Leon, putting some serious distance between themselves and the rest of the relegation zone and severely damaging Sevilla's hopes of a European ticket in the process.
Michel scored twice to guide Almeria past Cordoba in a battle between relegation-threatened teams, cancelling out Federico Nicolas Cartabia's opener.
Chris Moar of beIN Sports was impressed with the visitors' second half, although he also noticed Cordoba looked awful after a positive first 45 minutes:
"Massive 3 points for Almeria. Super second half, Córdoba's capitulation helped too. Expect a livid Djukic in the post-match presser.
— Chris (@MoarFootball) February 8, 2015"
Cordoba manager Miroslav Djukic was understandably disappointed with the final result, via Inside Spanish Football's Jamie Kemp:
"We can’t allow these periods where we lose concentration. They’ve threatened us twice and come away with two goals. It’s a tough blow but we go on. We have to make up for this and be prepared to fight. We’re one of many teams that are close together but we’ve shown before that we can compete with anyone.
"
The gap between both teams is now four points, and with Almeria's positive play in the past few weeks, the club has to feel good about its chances of avoiding the drop.
Saturday Recap

The Madrid derby is usually a fixture filled with magic and controversy, but the tie turned into a nightmare for Carlo Ancelotti as his Real side collapsed like a deck of cards, losing 4-0 against Atleti.
The current La Liga leaders arrived at the Calderon on a six game unbeaten streak, per WhoScored.com, but that record evaporated in the most embarrassing way possible—at the home of their "poorer" rival.
The game started well for Diego Simeone's side as Tiago fired in with accuracy to take a 1-0 lead on 14 minutes, with Iker Casillas not covering himself in glory in the Galacticos goal.

And Atleti soon doubled their lead with a spectacular effort from substitute Saul Niguez in the 18th minute. Niguez came on as an early sub for the injured Koke and accurately hit an overhead kick from close range to double his side's lead.
Madrid huffed and puffed as they tried to get themselves back into the game but it was all against the run of play.
After the break, the home side continued their domination but Los Blancos had plenty of possession, as the final stats were to show.
The third goal of the night came from the brilliantly in-form Frenchman, Antoine Griezmann, who struck his 12th goal in 22 La Liga appearances, per WhoScored.com.

And the misery for Madrid was compounded at the end of the night as big Croatian forward Mario Mandzukic grabbed a deserved goal for his starring performance, with a powerful header on 89 minutes.
Ancelotti was left in shock in his post-match press conference and admitted his team deserved nothing on the night, per Dermot Corrigan of ESPNFC:
"We all failed, we all arrived second, we lost all the tackles, all the aerial battles. We did not play the game at all. We did not have one player who played a good game.
We did not have good possession, had no chances to counter, we had nothing [in attack] today. They deserved to win this game, they were better in everything. We were worse in everything.
"

Ancelotti's side had more of the ball in the game, claiming a 55% share of possession, per BBC Sport, but Atleti crucially had the important attacking play, having eight shots on target compared to Real's one.
Bleacher Report's Guillem Balague said the result was not unexpected, with Atletico's dogs of war proving their title credentials with great gusto:

In Saturday's other games, Villerreal consolidated their sixth place position in La Liga with a 2-0 win against lowly Granada.
A first half own goal from Diego Mainz was followed by a late second half tap-in by Gerard Moreno to complete the win for the Valencian club, keeping them in the hunt for a Champions League finish.
Levante grabbed the second shock result of Saturday after they dismantled Malaga at home, winning 4-1.
A David Barral hat-trick saw his side leapfrog off the bottom of the table and out of the relegation zone, with seventh place Malaga in a state of shock.
And in the final fixture of the night, David Moyes' Real Sociedad were disapointed by a late Celta Vigo goal, as the sides drew 1-1.
Sociedad lead through a fifth minute goal from striker Imanol Agirretxe but Celta drew the match level in the dying minutes from a superb snap-shot by Nolito.
Friday Recap
Deportivo La Coruna extended their unbeaten streak to three matches on Friday, sending Eibar packing from the Riazor thanks to a 2-0 win for the hosts.
It was a drab night for the visitors, with Real Madrid TV presenter Phil Kitromilides attesting that a lack of travelling support may not have given Gaizka Garitano's men the greatest confidence boost:
Goals from Lucas Perez and Ivan Cavaleiro gave the home outfit their victory, but both goals came as a result of avoidable lapses in defence.
The first half was lacking in clear-cut chances, and neither team succeeded to inspire as they went in scoreless at the break. However, a mistake from Eibar goalkeeper Xabi Irureta led Perez to open the scoreline, per beIN Sports:
But Borja Ekiza would match that with a woeful error in judgement of his own, attempting a back-pass that Cavaleiro would latch on to and steer past the visitors:
Eibar are now without a win in their last four La Liga outings and have lost three in a row, a far cry away from the first half of the season, which saw them rise as the rags-to-riches story of the top flight.
Depor move within three points of their Friday opponents and will seek to keep moving through the ranks in a bid, having now gone three matches without a loss.
