Hull City vs. Newcastle United: Score, Grades, Reaction from Premier League Game

Michael CummingsJan 31, 2015

Remy Cabella, Sammy Ameobi and Yoan Gouffran scored the goals as Newcastle won 3-0 at relegation candidates Hull City on Saturday in the Premier League.

The hosts started well and created the better chances for much of the first half at the KC Stadium, but Newcastle took the lead in the 40th minute via Cabella's fine solo strike. Hull had a goal ruled out on the stroke of half-time, Ahmed Elmohamady correctly penalised for a handball while converting a Gaston Ramirez free-kick.

Ameobi doubled Newcastle's lead with an outstanding long-distance effort in the 50th minute, and Gouffran sealed the points with the Magpies' third 12 minutes from time.

Hull entered the weekend mired in the relegation zone, one point away from safety. Saturday's loss will be especially discouraging, considering the number of chances Steve Bruce's side created throughout the 90 minutes.

The Tigers will hope to rebound next weekend, but the fixture list offers little relief. Up next for Hull is a trip to defending champions Manchester City next Saturday.

Newcastle, meanwhile, moved up to 10th place, at least temporarily, with 30 points through 23 matches. The Magpies won for the first time since former manager Alan Pardew departed for Crystal Palace and will likely see the result as a stepping stone for future success.

So, too, will John Carver, who this week learned he will remain Newcastle manager at least until the end of the season. With a few more positive results, Carver will give himself a better chance to keep the job full-time.

Hull started the match brightly, Andrew Robertson creating danger in the second minute with a driven cross from the right that flew too close to Newcastle goalkeeper Tim Krul, who collected. In the eighth minute, Michael Dawson headed just wide from a Ramirez cross.

The hosts came close again in the 18th minute. Elmohamady beat his marker on the right flank before crossing from deep on the right. Curtis Davies rose highest to meet it, directing a downward header on target. Krul scrambled, pushing the ball to Fabricio Coloccini, who chested it away to safety.

Hull had been the more dangerous side to that point, but Newcastle grabbed the opening goal in the 40th minute. Robertson was at fault, gifting possession to Cabella just outside the hosts' box. Cabella cut to his left and deposited a fine shot into the bottom corner for a 1-0 Newcastle lead.

Hull had a goal ruled out correctly in stoppage time. The hosts thought they had scored when Elmohamady redirected a Ramirez free-kick into the net. But referee Phil Dowd ruled out the strike for a handball—replays proved it was the correct decision—and booked Elmohamady.

Leading 1-0 at half-time, Newcastle doubled their lead with another super strike shortly after the restart. In the 50th minute, Ramirez gifted possession to Newcastle's Jack Colback, who passed to Ameobi well outside the box. After taking a pair of touches, Ameobi smashed a dipping strike past Allan McGregor for Newcastle's second.

Hull nearly pulled a fortunate goal back in the 53rd minute following a scramble in Newcastle's box. In an attempt to clear, Coloccini managed to slice an awkward, fluttering ball in the direction of his own goal. Krul was stranded, but Vurnon Anita headed clear to maintain the Magpies' clean sheet.

The hosts should have scored 11 minutes later. Robertson created more danger down the left flank, freeing Ramirez with an angled pass into the box. Ramirez squared into the goalmouth for Nikica Jelavic, who somehow missed the target from very close range.

Hull needed goals quickly, but none were to come. In the 71st minute, substitute Sone Aluko tried a shot from distance, but his low effort was saved comfortably by Krul.

If the hosts still had a chance, it was gone in the 78th minute as Newcastle scored their third. Again poor defending contributed, Gouffran weaving his way through Hull's midsection with ease before hitting a deflected strike past McGregor.

Hull created another opportunity in the 85th minute but were again unable to convert. Ramirez rose to meet a corner, directing his header on goal—only for the ball to hit Coloccini's torso and bounce wide of the post.

Reaction

Hull City manager Steve Bruce (via PremierLeague.com):

"

For 30 minutes until Newcastle scored there wasn't much between us but after that it was a cardinal of errors for the other two goals we gave away.

We have enough quality in the dressing room. When you have a tough time you need to know who you can rely on and unfortunately we are not doing enough.

"

Newcastle United head coach John Carver (via PremierLeague.com):

"

I thought it was an excellent game from our point of view. I thought we had a good game plan, the first half not a great deal between the two sides but in particular a fantastic save by Tim Krul (to deny Curtis Davies) which made all the difference.

Then go down the other end and Remy Cabella produces what I asked him to produce before the game, which was a fantastic strike. He had the composure, I see him do that on a regular basis on the training ground.

We are really concerned about his end product, but he is now starting to produce it and if he keeps those performances going then he has a bright future at this football club and one thing for sure is if he keeps doing things like that the fans will love him.
