Twitter Reacts to Luis Figo's Decision to Run for FIFA Presidency
In an effort to prevent Sepp Blatter from serving his fifth term as FIFA Presdient, a number of prominent figures have thrown their proverbial hats into the ring.
Earlier in January, we learned that David Ginola intended to apply for the most powerful job in football. However, his campaign has been stunted by a lack of support from FIFA member nations, some underwhelming attempts at fundraising and the fact that his bid is being backed by an Irish bookmaker—Gabriele Marcotti of ESPN notes that FIFA rules prevent links to gambling.
Yet Ginola isn't the only form winger with fantastic hair who wants the Big Job: Luis Figo has announced that he intends to stand...

In an exclusive interview with CNN, the 42-year-old outlined his intention to make sweeping changes in football's governing body:
"I care about football, so what I'm seeing regarding the image of FIFA—not only now but in the past years—I don't like it.
If you search FIFA on the Internet you see the first word that comes out: scandal—not positive words. It's that we have to change first and try to improve the image of FIFA. Football deserves much better than this.
"
Twitter has had plenty to say about the former Barcelona and Real Madrid star's decision to enter sports politics, and he has received plenty of positive support...
"Salop !!!! There is no way blatter gonna win that upcoming Fifa election .. Now Luis figo has entered the race for president
— DaBadGuy (@frakac4) January 28, 2015"
"My apologies Mr. Ginola, but I have to switch my allegiance to #TeamFigo
— Alex Marks (@AlexMarks1) January 28, 2015"
Figo also claims to have the the backing of five of FIFA's 209 member associations, the minimum requirement to stand for the presidency...
"Won't be hard for @LuisFigo to gain backing of 5 associations: Portugal, Angola,Mozambique,Cape Verde & Guinea-Bissau.
— Alexander Nicholson (@alexandernico) January 28, 2015"
However, support for the former World Player of the Year isn't universal, with many pooh-poohing his credentials and chances...
Evidently, many are also unwilling to forgive and forget his highly controversial move between Barcelona and Real Madrid...
Apparently Mr. Blatter is unfazed by his new Portuguese rival...
Something the Internet can agree on, however, is how Figo's dynamic fashion and haircut history will enrich football's governing body...
"Sepp Blatter doesn't stand a chance. #TeamFigo pic.twitter.com/W4RO7Gi0xh
— BreatheSport (@BreatheSport) January 28, 2015"
And of course, there has been plenty of pigs head-based banter...
"20 - Number of pig's heads Sepp Blatter has sent Luis Figo today. Rivalry.
— OptaJoke (@OptaJoke) January 28, 2015"
Ultimately, Figo will have a tough time ousting Blatter—who is supported by a large number of non-European countries and has the united backing of Africa's 53 members—and fending off the other candidates, who include former FIFA Vice President Prince Ali Bin Al-Hussein and Dutch FA head honcho Michael van Praag.
His surprise candidacy, however, is clearly making waves.
