QPR vs. Manchester United: Louis Van Gaal and Harry Redknapp Post-Game Reaction

Gianni VerschuerenJan 17, 2015

Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal was forced to defend his 3-5-2 formation after the club's 2-0 win over Queens Park Rangers, as the Red Devils put together sloppy performance and were jeered by the away fans demanding a back-four all match long.

As reported by Manchester Evening News' Samuel Luckhurst, the Dutch manager is well aware the system the fans desire creates more chances, but he's unwilling to sacrifice the balance of his squad:

"

I know in advance when we play with four midfielders in a diamond that we create more chances.

But then the balance of the team is also weak.

And you see it because we have created chances but also Queens Park Rangers have, and we have to decide every week how to play. That's the question.

But with the other system (3-5-2) we played against Tottenham, maybe you remember the first-half - we created six or seven chances more than today and we don't score.

The Red Devils struggled to break down QPR's defence until substitute Marouane Fellaini broke the deadlock after 58 minutes, and youngster James Wilson scored his first goal of the season to ensure the win.

Fans of the club chanted "4-4-2" throughout the first half and were given what they wanted when Jonny Evans left the pitch with an injury, but judging by his comments, Van Gaal's decision to switch had little to do with the fans.

Radamel Falcao continued his poor run or form with another inefficient performance, missing a huge chance in the first half. Van Gaal didn't hide the fact he was unimpressed with the Colombia international's finishing. He did praise his work-rate, however:

"

In the first-half, I think we created one chance and I think Falcao has to score.

But in the second-half I think Falcao was also three times occupied with big chances and we scored two goals.

It's not so important what I think because he wants to score goals and for me I have to judge how he has played and scoring goals is an important aspect of a striker, I know.

But for me, also, it is very important, that, if he is an attacking point we can play further with the striker that we are coming in a third or fourth pace of our attack. And I think he did it well.

"

Wilson and Fellaini were the heroes of the day, and as one might expect, the United boss had plenty of praise for the duo, per the club's official Twitter feed:

He also clarified his decision to continue using the young Wilson as a striker, emphasising his athleticism as a powerful tool for the squad, via WhoScored.com's Ben McAleer:

David de Gea kept another clean sheet on Saturday, and Van Gaal felt compelled to praise his star goal-keeper, something he claims he won't do very often, per Purely Football:

QPR's Harry Redknapp felt his team deserved better, but a failure to break down United's defence cost them, via the club's official Twitter feed:

He praised the effort of his squad, who fought for 90 minutes against one of the top sides in English football:

Redknapp also took a dig at the assembled journalists, per the Associated Press' Rob Harris:

While their performance certainly wasn't what was expected, United leave Loftus Road with three points and a chance to gain on rivals Manchester City, who will play Arsenal on Sunday.

No matter how much the fans complain, the 3-5-2 appears to be Van gaal's favoured system under the current circumstances, even if the opposing team doesn't present a lot of danger moving forward.

QPR continue to sink in the Premier League standings, and with less than half a season left to play, Rangers need to put together a run of results to avoid the drop just one year after winning promotion.
