Top 13 Uncommitted Playmakers to Watch in High School All-American Games
The first days of 2015 will provide fans across the country a chance to catch the future stars of college football compete against one another.
The 2015 Under Armour All-America Game kicks off on Friday in Tampa, Florida, while the U.S. Army All-American Game will take place a day later in San Antonio, Texas.
Between the two games, a number of top prospects who are still uncommitted will display their talents.
Which playmakers still on the market should fans be paying close attention to over the weekend?
Under Armour All-America Game: Offense
1 of 4The Under Armour roster is loaded with talent on the offensive side of the ball, but viewers should particularly monitor Team Armour’s skill talent.
Soso Jamabo, a 5-star running back, is one of the nation’s most talented rushers. The 6’2.5”, 210-pounder who has schools such as Baylor, Notre Dame, Texas A&M and UCLA fighting it out for his commitment rushed for 2,279 yards and 44 touchdowns as a senior.
He will be joined on Team Armour by a pair of electric receivers in 5-star Tyron Johnson and 4-star Damarkus Lodge.
Auburn, Oklahoma State and Texas Tech are among the schools trying to pull Johnson away from home-state power LSU. The 6’1”, 191-pound New Orleans native had 1,589 yards receiving and 17 touchdown catches in his senior season.
Lodge was one of the main catalysts on a Cedar Hill (Texas) High School squad that captured the 6A Division II state title. The 6’2.5”, 190-pounder who recently decommitted from an early pledge to Texas A&M caught 25 touchdown passes as a senior.
One player to watch on Team Highlight is 5-star running back Damien Harris, who rushed for 1,576 yards and 23 touchdowns despite playing in only seven games this season.
The nation’s No. 2 back will make his commitment on Jan. 9, with Alabama, Kentucky and Ohio State among his final choices.
Under Armour All-America Game: Defense
2 of 4While Team Armour has a loaded offensive unit, Team Highlight counters with a trio of defensive standouts who can create game-changing plays in a hurry.
At 6’2”, 205 pounds, 4-star linebacker Roquan Smith is a disruptive force who can create havoc rushing the passer or in coverage.
LSU, Ole Miss and UCLA are among the out-of-state schools trying to keep the Georgia native from heading to Athens to play for the homestanding Bulldogs.
Smith will be joined by a pair of 5-star corners in Iman Marshall and Kendall Sheffield.
Marshall is the nation’s top-ranked corner and has Florida State, LSU, Michigan, Notre Dame and USC among his top group of schools.
Among the headliners of players scheduled to announce their commitments during the game is Sheffield, who will choose between Alabama, Florida State and Texas A&M, according to Steve Wiltfong of 247Sports.
Both players will get a chance to prove their mettle as lockdown corners against some of the nation’s most explosive receivers.
U.S. Army All-American Game: Offense
3 of 4One of the more anticipated announcements scheduled to take place at the U.S. Army All-American Game is the commitment of 4-star Florida athlete Tim Irvin.
The 5’9”, 186-pounder who will play safety for the East squad has Florida, Miami, Texas and West Virginia among his favorites heading into his announcement.
Given his skill set on offense, he could also play running back or receiver on the college level.
The West squad will feature one of the nation’s most coveted receivers in 4-star wideout Trent Irwin.
The 6’2”, 190-pounder is down to Arizona State and Stanford, according to Barton Simmons of 247Sports.
Per MaxPreps, Irwin hauled in 106 receptions for 1,974 yards and 22 touchdowns this season.
Another dynamic talent who will line up with the West squad is 4-star running back Chris Warren.
The 6’2”, 232-pounder ran for 2,329 yards and 34 scores as a senior. Watching Warren compete against a stout defensive front seven on the East squad is an intriguing subplot to Saturday's game.
U.S. Army All-American Game: Defense
4 of 4Following his recent decommitment from South Carolina, the interest in 4-star corner Mark Fields has picked up considerably.
Clemson and Texas will try to prevent him from eventually landing in Columbia.
The 5’11”, 183-pounder is one of the nation’s top corners, and he’s a threat to make life difficult for the West squad’s passing game.
Another explosive standout who could make plays on either side of the ball is 4-star Louisiana athlete Donte Jackson.
Georgia and LSU are battling one another in the race to land the 5’11”, 175-pounder who could play corner, receiver or running back at the next level.
Regardless of where he plays on Saturday, Jackson is a versatile prospect who can create big plays in an instant.
Rounding out the crop of uncommitted standouts in San Antonio is Marvell Tell, who is rated as the nation’s No. 4 safety prospect.
He is slated to make his commitment during the game, with Oregon, Texas A&M, UCLA and USC vying for his pledge.
The 6’2”, 175-pound California product is a ball-hawking safety capable of preventing the big play.
