Army All-American Bowl 2015: 5 Players to Watch

Tyler DonohueDec 29, 2014

The U.S. Army All-American Bowl takes center stage Saturday afternoon in San Antonio, presenting a national platform for college football's premier prospects. This star-studded event has featured plenty of eventual NFL standouts, including Andrew Luck, LeSean McCoy, DeMarco Murray and Jamaal Charles.

The latest edition of a highly anticipated annual matchup supplies a heavy dose of talent from across the country. Here's a look at five players who provide some extra incentive to tune in Saturday.

WR Deon Cain (Tampa, Florida)

1 of 5

247Sports' Composite Rankings: No. 22 overall; No. 3 wide receiver

High School: Tampa Bay Tech High School

Recruitment Status: Committed to Clemson

Why He's Worth Watching

We haven't seen Deon Cain spend much time at receiver throughout his high school career, so expect him to take advantage of the opportunity in Texas. The 6'1", 190-pound prospect lined up behind center at Tampa Bay Tech, where he shined as a dual-threat quarterback.

Cain collected more than 3,000 total yards and 24 touchdowns as a senior, per MaxPreps. He gained nearly 1,900 yards on the ground, averaging 7.5 yards per rushing attempt.

He took reps at receiver during offseason seven-on-seven circuits and flashed consistency as a pass-catcher, despite a lack of high-school routes. Cain's natural ability shined among the best at The Opening, leading many to wonder whether he might just be the best receiver in this class.

Keep any eye on the action in San Antonio when he lines up along the perimeter. Cain could quickly become the next great downfield threat at Clemson, where receivers coach Jeff Scott has big plans for him.

"He said I can line up anywhere and get the ball in his offense," Cain told Barton Simmons of 247Sports. "It doesn't matter where I'm at."

LB Porter Gustin (Elk Ridge, Utah)

2 of 5

247Sports' Composite Rankings: No. 58 overall; No. 6 outside linebacker

High School: Salem Hills High School

Recruitment Status: Considering Arizona State, USC, Notre Dame and Ohio State, among others.

Why He's Worth Watching

The 6'5", 240-pounder is among the most versatile front-seven defenders in this class, and he'll aim to prove it during All-American action. Porter Gustin turned heads this summer at The Opening, qualifying for Nike's SPARQ national finals, which focuses on finding the nation's most athletic football prospect.

He carried momentum into his senior season, warranting honors as one of six U.S. Army All-American Player of the Year finalists. Gustin, who could line up at linebacker or defensive end in college, also played quarterback at Salem Hills.

"Teams definitely like my versatility, and think I can play different roles depending on the situation," Gustin told Bleacher Report this fall.

He tallied 3,700 total yards and 33 touchdowns in 2014, per MaxPreps. Gustin also led the state in tackles (152), adding 10.5 sacks and two interceptions.

You better believe opposing quarterbacks will be aware of his whereabouts in San Antonio and at the next level.

RB Johnny Frasier (Princeton, North Carolina)

3 of 5

247Sports' Composite Rankings: No. 62 overall; No. 6 among running backs

High School: Princeton High School

Recruitment Status: Committed to Florida State

Why He's Worth Watching

Johnny Frasier boasts perhaps the most impressive blend of size and speed in this running-back class. He runs downhill with a formidable physical frame and uses above-average burst (4.45 seconds in the 40-yard dash) to explode into the second level.

The 5'11", 220-pound playmaker surpassed 7,000 rushing yards during the past three seasons. Frazier registered a career-high 248 carries in 2013, gaining 3,042 yards and 45 scores on the ground as a junior.

He tallied 2,266 rushing yards and 33 touchdowns this fall, per MaxPreps. Frasier features a multi-dimensional skill set in the backfield, evidenced by 46 receptions for 826 yards and eight touchdowns as an upperclassman.

Florida State will look to plug him into a running back rotation that already includes 2014 5-star Dalvin Cook and is set to welcome fellow 4-star 2015 rusher Jacques Patrick. The trio could take the Seminoles to even greater offensive heights.

WR Trent Irwin (Valencia, California)

4 of 5

247Sports' Composite Rankings: No. 76 overall; No. 8 wide receiver

High School: Hart High School

Size: 6'2", 190 pounds

Recruitment Status: Considering Stanford and Arizona State.

Why He's Worth Watching

Trent Irwin leaves behind quite a high school legacy, topping the all-time receptions list in California history. He hauled in 285 catches as a four-year starter, resulting in 5,268 yards—another all-time mark for the state.

The 6'2", 190-pound standout punctuated his career in style. Irwin caught a career-best 102 passes for 1,974 yards in 2014, per MaxPreps.

His 22 touchdown receptions this fall highlight big-play potential, and he logged double-digit catch totals in five contests. He spent the past three seasons serving as the top target for Arizona State quarterback commit Brady White.

The duo will play together again in the All-American Bowl, and there's a strong chance they'll reunite as Sun Devils.

QB Torrance Gibson (Miami Gardens, Florida)

5 of 5

247Sports' Composite Rankings: No. 74 overall; No. 5 athlete

High School: American Heritage High School

Size: 6'4", 200 pounds

Recruitment Status: Committed to Ohio State

Why He's Worth Watching

There's still plenty of speculation swirling around Torrance Gibson and his collegiate potential. Some believe he's a ideal fit at quarterback in Urban Meyer's spread offensive attack, while others expect him to eventually end up at receiver.

Gibson is extremely clear about his intentions.

"I'm a quarterback," he told Bleacher Report this summer. "Any of the schools I'm considering see me as a quarterback too."

He completed just 50 percent of pass attempts as an upperclassman, but his production is apparent.

Gibson threw 40 touchdowns and just six interceptions during the past two seasons, leading American Heritage to consecutive state titles. He rushed for 1,000 yards in both campaigns.

Plenty of prognosticators will view his performance in San Antonio as an indicator of where his development as a quarterback currently stands. Gibson can prove he's continued to work on mechanics while facing some of the nation's top defenders.
