Breaking Down Oregon vs. Florida State
The battle between Oregon and Florida State is one of the most anticipated matchups of the entire bowl season. Not only will the matchup take place in the famed Rose Bowl arena, but it will also be the first ever semifinal matchup in the inaugural College Football Playoff.
The Ducks come into the postseason with the third-ranked offensive unit, averaging an astounding 46.3 points per game. With the 11th-ranked pass attack and the 22nd-ranked rushing game (308.9 and 237.3 yards per game respectively), Oregon will be the most talented offensive unit the Seminoles have faced all season.
Dan Greenspan of The Associated Press shared Oregon defensive coordinator Don Pellum’s comments about the Seminoles:
Florida State linebacker Reggie Northrup spoke to Natalie Pierre of AL.com about the matchup against the Ducks, saying, “Everybody has their strengths and weaknesses. Oregon, they're a great team. There's a lot of stuff we see that's pretty exciting. We're excited to play them, there's a lot of stuff that we see that we'll have an edge on.”
As good as the Ducks have been offensively, the program’s defensive unit will be pushed to its limit against Jameis Winston and the Florida State offense. While the running game has been inconsistent, the team enters the semifinals ranked 14th in the nation in passing yards with 299.8 per game.
The Seminoles will square off against Oregon’s 29th-ranked defense, allowing just 22.5 points per game, but Florida State’s 30th-ranked defense deserves as much credit. While Ducks quarterback Marcus Mariota will give his team the slight edge, there is no doubt this will be a close battle.
College football fans can’t miss this Rose Bowl matchup.
Predicted Final Score: Oregon 33, Florida State 30
