Carlisle Involved in Collision with Lorry
Monday, Dec. 24
Former Queens Park Rangers defender and Professional Footballers' Association chairman Clarke Carlisle is in a critical condition after a collision with a lorry.
The 35-year-old, who played his final match as a professional in 2013, was "airlifted to Leeds General infirmary with life-threatening injuries," according to the Daily Mail's Matt Lawton.
Natalie Pirks, a BBC News sports correspondent, quickly updated that Carlisle's injuries are not life-threatening as first feared:
The incident occurred at 7.30 a.m. on Monday on the A64 near Bishopthorpe, North Yorkshire, but news of his condition only started to trickle through late on Monday night.
According to BBC Sport, a police spokeswoman confirmed a male pedestrian and a lorry had been involved.
The Press Association's Simon Peach immediately offered his support to the family of Carlisle:
Match of the Day commentator Steve Wilson was shocked to hear the news:
Carlisle was known as one of the most intelligent players on British pitches during his playing career, and he achieved further fame after his career with appearances on the TV show Countdown and as an ITV pundit.
BBC Sport elected him as "Britain's Brainiest Footballer" in 2002, and he was a logical choice as chairman of the PFA.
