Liverpool vs. Arsenal: Date, Time, Live Stream, TV Info and Preview

Rory MarsdenDec 20, 2014

Liverpool will be looking to bounce back from last weekend's 3-0 defeat to Manchester United when they host Arsenal at Anfield on Sunday.

The Reds have been enduring a terrible season thus far in the Premier League and currently sit in 11th place, and another loss against the Gunners is not an option for Brendan Rodgers' men.

However, they face a resurgent Arsenal side who beat in-form Newcastle 4-1 last time out and it is likely to be a hard-fought match on Merseyside.

In the corresponding fixture last season, Liverpool blew Arsenal away, going 4-0 up in 20 minutes and eventually winning the match 5-1.

The memory will no doubt be a galvanising factor for Arsene Wenger and the Gunners on Sunday as they look for revenge, and they are up against a far weaker team on this occasion with the Reds also lacking in confidence.

Rodgers will not be able to call on Mario Balotelli as the Italian has been suspended for one match for a controversial social media post, per BBC Sport, a decision that has proven somewhat contentious, per BT Sport's Ian Darke:

However, Rodgers must ignore all distractions, as a victory against Arsenal could prove a galvanising factor for the season, while a loss would condemn them to the bottom half of the table at Christmas and a second consecutive league defeat.

The biggest issue that will face Liverpool's currently struggling defence is Gunners star Alexis Sanchez. The Chilean forward was a key Liverpool target in the summer, and Rodgers admitted ahead of Sunday's game that the Anfield outfit have been hurt through missing out on him, Jack Pitt-Brooke in the Independent:

"

Sanchez was identified for us as someone who would have been a key signing and really just a roll on to what we had with Luis Suarez. So to not get him was obviously bitterly disappointing, but once he was gone that was it.

"

Sanchez has bagged nine goals so far this term in the league, per WhoScored.com, and he will be Arsenal's main attacking threat on Sunday along with Olivier Giroud, who bagged a brace last time out.

For Liverpool, Rodgers opted at Old Trafford last weekend to play with Raheem Sterling as the most advanced player.

Though they lost 3-0, the Reds did actually have a lot of chances against United, per ESPN FC's James Tyler, and Rodgers may opt for a similar setup at Anfield, particularly in the absence of Balotelli:

Despite Liverpool's current lowly league position, a trip to Anfield is still a significant challenge for Arsenal and they need to show that they have what it takes to beat the so-called bigger teams.

In their three matches against United, Manchester City and Chelsea this season, the Gunners have picked up just a solitary point, continuing a worrying trend against the top Premier League clubs.

They have good momentum on the back of last weekend's drubbing of Newcastle and a string of good performances could see them move into the top four over the Christmas period.

While in years past, leaving Anfield with a draw would potentially have been seen as a good result, Arsenal must be aiming for victory on Sunday with the Reds currently at such a low ebb.

Both sides will look to raise their respective games for such a big occasion and, with the talent on show, it is set to be a cracking matchup. There is a great deal at stake for both sides and the tension will be palpable at Anfield.
