Matthews Injures Achilles
Thursday, March 5
Wesley Matthews suffered a non-contact injury to his left leg Thursday evening vs. the Mavericks, which was later confirmed to be a torn Achilles by the Blazers PR team.
ESPNDallas.com's Tim MacMahon first reported that Mathews would leave the floor without putting pressure on his left leg, even speculating on a possible Achilles injury.
On Friday, Mathews took to Instagram to talk about the injury:
Sports Illustrated's Ben Golliver provided a replay of when Matthews went down:
Kerry Eggers of the Portland Tribune joined Bleacher Report's Stephen Nelson to speak about the impact the injury will have for the remainder of the season:
It's a bit comical thinking back to the criticism leveled at the Blazers after they signed Matthews to a five-year, $32.5 million deal back in 2010. More than a few fans and writers questioned whether Portland overpaid for a largely unproven commodity.
Instead, Matthews has grown into a dependable 2-guard capable of making his impact felt on both ends. Although the 28-year-old is unlikely to ever make an All-Star or All-NBA team, he's the kind of role player who often proves invaluable for teams harboring NBA title hopes.
Matthews is averaging 16.1 points, 3.7 rebounds and 1.3 steals a game entering Thursday. He's also leading the team in made three-pointers (173).
Nobody doubts that Portland's postseason chances hinge largely on the play of LaMarcus Aldridge and Damian Lillard. However, losing Mathews for the remainder of the season is a huge blow on both ends of the floor.
