USA need a convincing win in Wednesday's match against Argentina if they are to have a chance of reaching the final of the four-team 2014 International Tournament of Brasilia.
It has not been the best campaign thus far. Jill Ellis' side have drawn 1-1 with China PR and lost 3-2 to hosts Brazil, and they now sit third with one round-robin group match remaining.
The USWNT are currently three points back from China PR and seven worse off on goal difference.

As the world's No. 1 team, USA would have expected to fare slightly better in the four-way tournament so far, but they should be able to claim a convincing win over 37th-ranked Argentina, per FIFA.
The South American side are rock bottom of the standings, shown below, having lost 6-0 to China PR and 4-0 to Brazil:
| Team | P | W | D | L | GD | Pts |
| Brazil | 2 | 2 | 0 | 0 | +5 | 6 |
| China PR | 2 | 1 | 1 | 0 | +6 | 4 |
| USA | 2 | 0 | 1 | 1 | -1 | 1 |
| Argentina | 2 | 0 | 0 | 2 | -10 | 0 |
The U.S. will need to inflict another crushing defeat on Argentina to put themselves in with the best chance of reaching Sunday's final, but they will still have to rely on Brazil to beat China PR.
However, Ellis will no doubt preach focus to her side ahead of Wednesday's game in the knowledge that there is nothing they can do about the result in the other match.
The Brazil loss—Marta's hat-trick overturning the U.S.'s early 2-0 lead—was the first defeat under Ellis, and she will be eager to return to winning ways.

Abby Wambach and Carli Lloyd will be key to piling on the goals, the former having scored nine in the last eight, the latter seven in six, per US Soccer.
However, the defence will also need to be alert, their capitulation against Brazil demonstrating a worrying vulnerability, albeit against a much better side than Argentina.
A convincing win is not guaranteed for the USA despite Argentina's shocking recent run of form, which has seen them lose four on the bounce, scoring just twice while conceding 19.
While the Argentines can't possibly qualify for the final having lost twice already, they will be eager to retain some pride, especially as Wednesday's game could be a precursor to the third-place playoff, per The Equalizer's Jeff Kassouf:
Argentina have proved in the recent past that they can mix it with the best. They won three World Cup qualifiers on the trot back back in September, including a 2-0 victory over Brazil.
Thus, the U.S. cannot afford to be complacent, especially with a decent win needed to give themselves the best chance of a final berth.
They definitely have the quality, and the in-form players, to gain the win necessary, but it could end up all being for nothing.
Ellis and her team need a favour from Brazil, but they need to focus on doing their own job first and picking up their first three points of what has, so far, been a disappointing tournament.
