UEFA Champions League 2014: Final Groups, Last-16 Teams, Draw Info and Seedings

Gianni VerschuerenDec 10, 2014

The group stages of the 2014-15 UEFA Champions League are over, and representatives of the remaining clubs will travel to Nyon, Switzerland, for the draw of the round of 16 on Monday.

The rules for the draw are fairly simple. Top seeds will go into one pot, the second seeds in another, and teams will be drawn together. A club can't meet an opponent from their own association or from the group stages, and the group winners will be away in the first round of fixtures.

Here's how the two pots will look heading into the draw:

Atletico Madrid and Juventus qualified from Group A after a goalless draw on Tuesday, and it was fairly obvious neither team felt adventurous enough to chase a different result in Turin.

The Italian champions have disappointed on the European stage in previous seasons, but they remain one of the most talented teams in Europe and one of the squads all group winners will be hoping to avoid.

As shared by the club's official Twitter feed, star midfielder Paul Pogba couldn't care less about the draw:

Defending champions Real Madrid were the top team of the group stages, winning all of their Group B matches. Carlo Ancelotti's squad is firing on all cylinders, and while there's no guarantees their form will be similar in 2015, Los Blancos will be regarded as the strong favourites to repeat as champions.

As shared by Football_Tweet, the numbers are truly astounding:

FC Basel were the better team in both their meetings with Liverpool—count the Swiss champions among the best second seeds available in the draw.

Monaco jumped to the top spot of Group C on the final matchday, and on paper at least, the French squad will be viewed as the weakest of the group winners and the most favourable draw for the likes of Juventus and Arsenal.

They grabbed the top spot thanks to Bayer Leverkusen's surprising struggles in this year's Champions League, but when the Germans play up to their standards, they are one of the most dangerous and criminally underrated squads in Europe.

Compatriots Borussia Dortmund struggled for the second consecutive match, a 1-1 draw against Anderlecht. Bundesliga expert Clark Whitney noticed Die Schwarzgelben once again looked unconvincing on Tuesday:

Arsenal haven't looked particularly convincing, either, looking strong against Galatasaray and one of two meetings with Borussia Dortmund. If the Gunners can get healthy, they're more than capable of pulling off the upset, providing they get a favourable draw.

Like Real Madrid, Bayern Munich have looked largely dominant so far this season, with one exception being the collective off-night the players had against Manchester City. As shared by Squawka, such nights truly are a rarity for the Bavarians:

Manchester City finally overcame their European demons with a solid performance against AS Roma on the final matchday, securing passage to the round of 16. The English champions are frequently mocked for their inability to deliver on this level, but they have the talent to shock one of the top favourites in the next round.

Barcelona and Paris Saint-Germain predictably advanced from Group F, with both clubs looking in fine form headed for the knockout stages.

The French champions have had their struggles on the domestic level, but not unlike Dortmund, they've taken care of business in the Champions League and should be able to work on their form heading into 2015. Catalan giants Barcelona remain one of the absolute top teams in Europe and a favourite for this year's title.

Chelsea were undoubtedly the best English side of the group stages, and the Blues will be looked at to uphold the honor of the Premier League.

Schalke 04 qualified for the next round thanks to a close win over Maribor on the final matchday, and the Germans looked far from convincing doing so. Injuries have really held the squad back. If they can get healthy by the time the knockout stages start, they should be capable of a surprise or two.

Shakhtar Donetsk and FC Porto complete the list of teams that will be headed to the round of 16. Both are consistent performers on the European stage that could pose a real problem for some of the top clubs, but likely don't have the quality necessary to go all the way to the final.
