As the No. 1-ranked team in the world, per FIFA, the USA should have designs on winning the year-ending competition in Brazil and will look to get off to a good start against China.
It has been a decent year for Team USA. Since they lost twice back in March they have gone 14 matches undefeated and will hope to keep up their good form as they look ahead to next year's World Cup.
Ellis announced her roster of 24 players for the tournament on Friday, per the USWNT Twitter feed, which sees the returns of Lori Chalupny after a five-year absence because of concussions and Alex Morgan from injury:
The versatile Chalupny has finally been cleared to play after long-term concerns about the number of concussions she had suffered, per Jeff Kassouf on The Equalizer.
Meanwhile, striker Morgan returns from an ankle injury she suffered in October, the 25-year-old suggesting she may well take it easy with the World Cup in mind, again per Kassouf:
"I really hope that everything is okay and I’m back on the field in a couple weeks and that’s why I’m being a little bit more conservative because I don’t want to push it too much and have negative effects down the road.
"
The USA were drawn in a nightmare group for next summer's 2015 Canada World Cup on Saturday. They will play Australia, Sweden and Nigeria as they attempt to make the knockout stages, per Fox Soccer:
Here is the full draw, per ESPN FC:
With the World Cup on the horizon, the Brasilia tournament offers all four teams an opportunity to pit their wits against some genuinely top-class opposition.
China are the third-highest ranked of the four and, most recently, made it to the quarter-finals at the Asian Games, before being knocked out by eventual winners, North Korea.
The last time China met the US they were comprehensively beaten on two occasions back in April, losing 2-0 and 3-0.
They will hope for a better result on Wednesday and will certainly be hoping to get on the scoresheet, something they too often fail to do against the better sides.
It is set to be a fine encounter in Brasilia, but the US certainly go in as favourites, and a convincing win would see Ellis's outfit off to a strong start ahead of their matches with Argentina and Brazil.
