Manchester City closed the gap to table-topping Chelsea to just three points in Week 15 as the Blues lost their first league match of the season at Newcastle while Manuel Pellegrini's men beat Everton.

West Ham moved themselves up into third as they leapfrogged Manchester United and Southampton—who play each other Monday—with their Sunday win over Swansea.

QPR, meanwhile, moved out of the relegation zone with a vital victory against fellow strugglers Burnley. Here are the results from Week 15 in the English top flight:

Manchester City

MANCHESTER, ENGLAND - DECEMBER 06: Manuel Pellegrini, manager of Manchester City issues instructions to his players during the Barclays Premier League match between Manchester City and Everton at Etihad Stadium on December 6, 2014 in Manchester, England.

City notched their fifth win in a row in all competitions on Saturday with a 1-0 victory over Everton at the Etihad Stadium.

Yaya Toure scored from the spot in the first half after James Milner was fouled by Phil Jagielka in the penalty area, and City managed to keep Everton out for the remainder of the game. Joe Hart made a particularly fine save from a Romelu Lukaku volley with 10 minutes remaining.

However, there was a downside to their victory as top-scorer Sergio Aguero was forced off with a knee injury and Pellegrini's outlook on the situation post-game was not overly optimistic, per the Premier League:

With Chelsea's 2-1 loss to Newcastle coming in the lunchtime kick-off on Saturday, City's win moves them to within just three points of the Blues, who were looking unstoppable before their shock defeat.

With the Sky Blues' December schedule looking fairly easy with matches against bottom-six clubs Leicester, Crystal Palace, West Brom and Burnley, they could make further headway over the Christmas period.

The severity of Aguero's injury will be key, though, the Argentine having bagged 14 league goals this season, per WhoScored.com, and carrying City to victories on several occasions.

West Ham

Sam Allardyce's men carried on their terrific season on Sunday as they beat a good Swansea side 3-1 at Upton Park to move to their highest position in the Premier League for 15 years, per Squawka:

It was their third win on the bounce in the league and came courtesy of two Andy Carroll goals and a Diafra Sakho strike after Wilfried Bony had put the visitors ahead.

Carroll, making only his fourth start of the season, put in a truly fine performance as he caused the Swansea defense all kinds of problems. The former Newcastle man is clearly very confident that West Ham can maintain their lofty league position, or better it, per BBC 606:

While the league title is likely out of reach for West Ham, they could well be in with a shout of finishing the season high enough to qualify for European football next term if they continue in their current vein of form.

They will drop one place on Monday no matter what the result between Southampton and Manchester United—currently in fourth and fifth respectively—but a victory at Sunderland next weekend could see them back up into third spot.

Burnley

BURNLEY, ENGLAND - DECEMBER 02: Danny Ings of Burnley and Paul Dummett of Newcastle United battle for the ball during the Barclays Premier League match between Burnley and Newcastle United at Turf Moor on December 2, 2014 in Burnley, England. (Photo by

Burnley's 2-0 loss to QPR on Saturday was their first defeat in five league matches. They now sit in 19th place in the division, two points above rock-bottom Leicester, who lost 2-1 to Aston Villa on Sunday.

The Christmas period will be vital for the Turf Moor outfit in their bid to avoid relegation, but it is going to be a very tough ask to get any points in their remaining December matches, as they face Southampton, Tottenham, Liverpool and City.

Goalscoring has been a real issue for the Clarets so far this season. They have the joint-lowest return in the league, having netted just 10 times in 15 games.

Danny Ings is their top scorer with four goals, and he needs to find the back of the net on a consistent basis if Burnley are to avoid the drop at the end of the season.

The QPR loss was a big blow, as the west London side are set to be one of their relegation rivals, and points are going to be hard to come by in the rest of December for Burnley.
