Newcastle vs. Chelsea: Alan Pardew and Jose Mourinho Post-Match Reaction

Tom SunderlandDec 6, 2014

Jose Mourinho was left in a state of dismay after Chelsea suffered their first defeat of the season on Saturday, losing 2-1 to Newcastle United at St. James' Park.

The Blues' 17-match unbeaten streak in the Premier League came to an end at the hands of the Magpies and Mourinho was swift to point out time-wasting as a big factor in the result, per BBC Sport:

"

My team lost the way I like to lose which is to give everything and being unlucky. Only one team played to win. After the second goal the team lost their emotional balance. A point was the minimum we deserved. There could have been 20 minutes stoppage time but the situation would have been the same because things were happening outside the four lines that the referee couldn't control.

The referee can't punish the ball boy who disappeared with the ball, the referee couldn't punish the people in the crowd who kept the ball. I'm not obsessed with records and statistics, that's not for me, I want to win the league.

Two goals from Papiss Demba Cisse were prime examples of the hosts' counter strength on the day, a remarkable achievement given they had only three shots on target all game.

However, others saw more fault in Chelsea's performance than their manager suggested, including Alex Richards of the Mirror and Tom Williams of Agence France-Presse:

Alan Pardew's side were resilient at the back, coping with the injury of reserve goalkeeper Rob Elliot, with third-choice Jak Alnwick taking his place, while centre-back Steven Taylor saw red in the second half.

The Magpies boss spoke to BT Sport (h/t BBC Sport) after the victory, hailing his team but also seeing a different side of the coin when it came to time added:

"

That was about character and discipline against probably best team in Europe at the moment. At the start I thought we stood off Chelsea a bit, but we stuck at it. I've never had six minutes of stoppage time at home before. We've heard of Fergie time but that was about Mourinho time!

It's a special day for us. At the end we had players flying in blocking shots and that summed us up. We are in it together and pulling one way. Our tactical plan to stop Chelsea worked quite well. We're delighted to have given a little gee up to the Premier League. I'm sure Jose won't agree.

"

Pardew is two years into the eight-year contract he signed at St. James' Park in September 2012, but although things are looking up now, it hasn't always been easy during his spell as manager.

Match of the Day's Gary Lineker jested the tactician deserves a new deal following such a massive win:

Newcastle move back up to seventh spot as a result of their latest scalp and can once again begin to dream of Europe, even of this won't be counted as the most glamourous of triumphs.

Chelsea, meanwhile, are in a gloomier state. Should Manchester City win against Everton in Saturday's late fixture, their lead at the table's summit will be cut down to just three points.
