Wednesday Recap

Manchester City claimed a vital and impressive 4-1 away win over Sunderland at the Stadium of Light on Wednesday to keep pace with Chelsea, who maintained their six-point lead at the top of the table with a 3-0 defeat of Spurs.

Sergio Aguero's double saw him stretch his lead in the Premier League's scoring rankings, the Argentinian's 13th and 14th goals of the season proving decisive in City's victory.

His first came just moments after Connor Wickham had taken the lead for the home side in the 19th minute, Stevan Jovetic and Pablo Zabaleta then finding the back of the net also before Aguero's second finished things off.

In the absence of the suspended Diego Costa, strikers Didier Drogba and Loic Remy—along with Eden Hazard—scored for Chelsea in their convincing victory, The Telegraph's Henry Winter marvelling at the depth of Jose Mourinho's squad:

Indeed, Chelsea continue to look ominously good and their top scorer Costa will likely return for the trip to Newcastle at the weekend.

Another prolific league scorer also found the back of the net on Wednesday as Alexis Sanchez bagged a very late winner for Arsenal against Southampton.

The Chilean scored the only goal of the game in the 89th minute to hand the Gunners all three points at the Emirates and move Arsene Wenger's side into sixth—two points back from fourth-placed Manchester United.

Finally, out-of form Hull City were able to pick up a point as they drew 1-1 with Everton at Goodison Park, Romelu Lukaku's first-half opener cancelled out by Sone Aluko's goal on the hour.

While Chelsea continue to march on at the top of the table, a resurgent City could potentially compete with them if they carry on performing at the level they reached against Sunderland.

Meanwhile, the rest of the pack continues to tighten in the race for the top four and the relegation battle could chop and change drastically over a packed Christmas period.

Tuesday Recap

Manchester United continued to show growth and their 2-1 win over Stoke City was the club's fourth consecutive victory, further extending the club's finest streak of the 2014-15 campaign.

Before Juan Mata's second-half free-kick reestablished their lead, it was Marouane Fellaini who nodded home to give the hosts their lead after a fine Ander Herrera cross. WhoScored.com illustrates the Spaniard's stellar playmaking form of late:

Louis van Gaal's men keep their place in fourth as a result of the midweek triumph, but West Ham are keeping the pressure on the top four following their own 2-1 victory at the Hawthorns.

West Brom netted first to give Sam Allardyce's men a scare, but goals from Kevin Nolan and James Tomkins saw to it that the lead was overturned by half-time.

As OptaJoe shows, the Hammers have their own in-form playmaker to thank for setting up Tomkins' header, depicting the potent nature of Stewart Downing's revival since moving to Upton Park:

West Ham remain just a point off the top four and Liverpool are gradually making their way into contention. The Reds felled Leicester City, 3-1, at the King Power Stadium to record their second successive Premier League win and begin December by moving into the top half.

They too were forced to come back from a deficit, however, after Leonardo Ulloa's attempt on goal thudded off the woodwork, only to rebound in off the back of Simon Mignolet's head. Twitter was abuzz after the Belgian's latest embarrassment:

Adam Lallana, Steven Gerrard and Jordan Henderson struck back for the visitors to save their goalkeeper's blushes, and Newcastle United's 1-1 draw at Burnley gave Brendan Rodgers' side further cause for comfort.

Elsewhere, Swansea City were made to wait for their victory against Queens Park Rangers, but two goals in the space of five minutes from Ki Sung-Yueng and Wayne Routledge, per ESPN FC, secured the three points:

The Welsh outfit showed patience in taking their result, but it was quite the opposite story for Aston Villa, who bagged the opener against Crystal Palace after just 32 minutes but then had to stem the Eagles' assault.

Christian Benteke's 32nd-minute finish was ultimately enough to record a 1-0 victory, though, a third away win by that exact scoreline in the 2014-15 campaign.
