Manchester United vs. Stoke City, Tuesday

Manchester United welcome Stoke City to Old Trafford on Tuesday, looking to make it four wins on the spin following their 3-0 trouncing of Hull City on Saturday.
The entire football world has been patiently waiting for United to come good under Louis van Gaal, but it seems the Dutchman has finally found the formula for success.
The victory over Hull saw the Red Devils put together a sublime performance, leaving the manager to laud it as the best they’ve played under his guidance—per Chris Bevan of BBC Sport:
"It was the best match of our season. What pleased me the most was the way we dominated the game from the first minute to the last minute. It was the first time we have done that. We created many chances, we did not give the ball away too much unnecessarily and we kept a clean sheet again.
"

Van Gaal is clearly a long way from having an Old Trafford stand named after him, but the signs are good—he’s even found a way to get Robin van Persie’s scoring touch back.
The striker’s confidence would have been low after a very ordinary performance against former club Arsenal in Matchday 12, but he more than redeemed himself with a tremendous display—as Squawka Football’s statistics support:
Stoke City, then, may well be quaking in their boots ahead of Tuesday’s match, but they’ll be boosted by the absence of United’s star man, Angel Di Maria.
The Argentinian pulled up with a hamstring injury barely 10 minutes into the Hull clash, and United’s Twitter feed revealed that he’ll sit out for the visit of Stoke:
That said, there’s more than enough firepower in the Red Devils’ ranks to torment Stoke’s back line, and it may well be a case of “how many goals?” yet again.
The Potters are reasonably resilient, so it’s unlikely to be a drubbing. But Manchester United’s quest to return their elite status will undoubtedly continue.
Prediction: Manchester United 2-0 Stoke City
Chelsea vs. Tottenham Hotspur, Wednesday

Chelsea’s 0-0 draw away at Sunderland on Sunday was the first time that Jose Mourinho’s men have looked the slightest bit vulnerable this season, but the Blues’ title rivals needn’t get carried away.
Chelsea were just a goal away from an ideal away performance, and while the Black Cats threatened at times, a defeat never looked on the cards.

And based on history, the chances of the Blues tasting defeat on Wednesday are equally unlikely, as they’ve never lost at home to Spurs in the Premier League era, per 11v11.
However, they’ll be without top scorer Diego Costa on their mission to extend their lead at the top of the Premier League table after the Spaniard picked up his fifth booking of the season at the Stadium of Light—as MailOnline Sport revealed:
The bad news for Tottenham is that either Didier Drogba or Loic Remy will be deputising—two strikers who have been known to cause Spurs problems in the past. Remy, for example, scored Newcastle’s winner at White Hart Lane in the 2013/14 campaign.
Mauricio Pochettino’s side, though, will be hoping that they can do some damage with a striker of their own on Wednesday after Roberto Soldado returned to goalscoring form in Sunday’s 2-1 win over Everton.

The Spaniard notched the winner against the Toffees with a well-taken strike just before half-time and showed the kind of form that warranted his big-money price tag last summer, leaving Gary Lineker to sing his praises:
Soldado will likely line up in a one-man attack for Spurs, but it’s in midfield where Wednesday’s game will be won and lost.
How the visitors cope with Mourinho’s three-pin attacking line of Eden Hazard, Oscar and Willian could decide the outcome, but it’s safe to say that they’re just too strong to be tamed.
Costa or no Costa, the three amigos can pick teams apart at will, and Spurs will simply be their latest victims.
Prediction: Chelsea 3-1 Tottenham Hotspur

Elsewhere, Manchester City travel to the Stadium of Light—a ground that the champions have lost 1-0 on in each of their last four visits, via 11v11—while Leicester City welcome the out-of-sorts Liverpool to the King Power Stadium.
With vital points at stake in every encounter, it’s bound to be another entertaining matchday as teams look to lay solid foundations before the busy Christmas period begins.
