Sunday Recap

The first of two enticing Premier League encounters on Sunday saw second take on third, as Southampton welcomed the champions Manchester City to St. Mary’s.
The Saints have got off to an electrifying start to the 2014/15 campaign, but City’s 3-0 victory saw them leapfrog their hosts and move six points behind Chelsea, second from the top.
It took City all of 51 minutes to break the deadlock, with Yaya Toure’s strike from just outside the box giving Manuel Pellegrini’s side the lead that they deserved.
Eliaquim Mangala’s red card for two bookable offences 23 minutes later gave Southampton a glimmer of hope, but goals from Frank Lampard and Gael Clichy put the result beyond doubt.

While City were never really troubled throughout the afternoon, Mangala’s actions almost cost his side dearly, leaving Gary Lineker to reflect on his performances since the big-money signing in the summer:
However, digging deep is the sign of champions, and that’s what Lampard reflected on after the match—via Premier League:
As for Southampton, it’s safe to say that the tag of overachievers will now be going around.
The Saints got to second in the table on merit, undoubtedly, but their stretch of fixtures for the next eight games will go a long way to determining whether they’re Champions League candidates or not.
Based on Sunday’s display, though, the chances of Southampton rubbing shoulder with the top four for much longer are very slender indeed.

From two, top-four clubs to two trying to earn such a tag now, as Everton travelled to White Hart Lane to face Tottenham Hotspur in the day’s late kick-off. In a hard-hitting affair, the hosts came from behind to record a crucial 2-1 victory.
Spurs haven’t really got going in the Premier League yet, and when Kevin Mirallas opened the scoring for Everton 15 minutes in, it looked like being another one of those days for Mauricio Pochettino’s men.

However, just six minutes later Christian Eriksen pulled Tottenham level with a deft finish, before Roberto Soldado handed them the all-important lead on the stroke of half time.
The Spaniard has been the subject of plenty of criticism (and jokes) over his lack of goal scoring, but he’ll be hoping that Sunday’s strike opens the floodgates. Besides, the criticism certainly didn’t come without reason—per OptaJoe:
The victory lifts Spurs up to seventh in the table, level on point with rivals Arsenal and just two points adrift of fourth-place Manchester United.
However, a trip to league leaders Chelsea on Wednesday could well bring Tottenham fans back down to earth, with the Blues looking like running away with the league despite their 0-0 draw at Sunderland on Saturday (below).
Saturday Recap
Chelsea drew their third game of the season at the Stadium of Light and missed out on the opportunity to establish a nine-point lead at the top of the table, much to Mourinho's disdain.
Gus Poyet will cherish the point earned against his former club, but as Squawka shows, there was perhaps an even greater achievement than the result itself in managing to keep Chelsea at bay:
Edging closer to the Blues comes Manchester United, who after defeating Hull City 3-0 at Old Trafford are now back into fourth place and looking like achieving some consistency.
For the first time this season, the Red Devils have won three Premier League games in a row and were led by a standout performance from Robin van Persie, who scored one and assisted another as his side rampaged over the Tigers.

Prior to Saturday's fixture, manager Louis van Gaal had sounded out his Dutch forward after scoring just three times in 11 appearances this term.
In the 2-1 win over Arsenal last weekend, Van Persie touched the ball only 13 times against his former club, with Van Gaal quoted by the Mirror's David Anderson as saying:
"I do think 13 is too few for a striker. You can count his touches of the ball. More importantly is how he is playing and it was a very bad game from him. That is why I changed him.
I believe in the players, so when I change players it is normally because they are doing something not good in their performance. It’s a question also of confidence, maybe a question of scoring a wonderful goal. You know how strikers are, they have to score goals. They feel like that, but it’s not that I’m asking that.
"
This was the ideal response for Van Persie, who is under intensified pressure to perform with Radamel Falcao back to fitness, and he did his job astutely against Hull.
It was a less confident showing from Arsenal, and despite beating West Bromwich Albion 1-0 at the Hawthorns, Arsene Wenger was still shown to have his selection of doubters among the Gunners' support, per ESPN:
Danny Welbeck scored his sixth goal since joining Arsenal to guide the north Londoners past the Baggies in one of three 1-0 results to unfold on Saturday.
West Ham United won a frantic duel against Newcastle United at Upton Park thanks to Aaron Cresswell's 56th-minute effort, while Glen Johnson notched to put Liverpool past Stoke City.
One may not have envisioned the Hammers boasting brighter top-four prospects than the Reds at this stage of the campaign, but after beating the Magpies, Sam Allardyce's side now sit in fifth.
Brendan Rodgers' men remain lodged in the bottom half of the table, but after winning their first fixture in six outings, the manager was quoted by ESPN's John Brewin as being full of praise:
Saturday's most entertaining match unfolded somewhat surprisingly at Loftus Road, where Queens Park Rangers overcame Leicester City 3-2 following a tug-of-war between two of the Premier League new boys.
Attack was at an optimum in west London and The Sun provides details of just how often the two teams threatened their opponents' goal in a game that could have gone either way:
Elsewhere, there were more drab results at Turf Moor and the Liberty Stadium. Burnley failed to win three on the trot but finish November with just one defeat following their 1-1 draw against Aston Villa, while Swansea City were held by Crystal Palace to an identical scoreline.
Having now gotten a taste for victory, Clarets' boss Sean Dyche was unhappy not to take all three points against Paul Lambert's side, per the official Premier League Twitter account:
As a result of that draw, Leicester now shift into bottom place while Chelsea come closer to being within grasp of their pursuers thanks to the stumble at Sunderland.
With Southampton and Manchester City set to clash on Sunday, things are poised to get even more interesting at the top of the table, but Week 13 showed that, as per usual, the drama is worth watching league-wide.
