Points are currently decided through the following formula: result x importance of match x strength of opposition x confederation strength = total points.
A new weighting system was introduced after the recent World Cup, with points earned against each region now being multiplied on the following scale: CONMEBOL 1.00; UEFA 0.99; AFC, CAF, OFC and CONCACAF 0.85, per the governing body's official website. You can check an in-depth breakdown of the system right here.
As ever, the "World Cup cycle" system is in effect, meaning all results from the last four years are taken into account but depreciate in value. More information is available in FIFA's fact sheet.

This month's update sees very little change to the top 10, with each of the highest six nations remaining intact. Wins over Armenia and Argentina push Portugal onto equal points with France in seventh, with former world champions Spain also moving up one spot to ninth.
Uruguay are the only side in the top 10 to drop, while England, Romania and the Czech Republic can be extremely happy with their push to make the elite.
Roy Hodgson's Three Lions secured victories over Slovenia and Scotland to continue their unbeaten run since the World Cup. This pushes them to 13th and above Chile, who thrashed Venezuela 5-0 but lost to Uruguay during November's fixtures.
Hodgson highlighted a potentially bright future for the team after victory over the Scots. "We can get better, not least because so many players are so young," said the boss, reported by BBC Sport. "By France 2016 they will have so many more football matches under their belts."

Tunisia are the biggest climbers inside the top 25 due to a draw with Botswana and victory over Egypt in qualifying for the African Cup of Nations. Remaining unbeaten in six matches since June, per Soccerway, has also helped elevate the improving side.
Greece endured the worst fall of the top 25. The Euro 2004 winners haven't picked up a win in six matches since defeating Cote d'Ivoire at the World Cup and shockingly lost home ties with the Faroe Islands and Serbia earlier this month.
Coach Claudio Ranieri was sacked after the first match, reported by Sean Gallagher of the MailOnline. Ranieri had failed to produce a victory in the four months since taking over.

It is the Faroe Islands who capture this month's main plaudits after moving up the most places, per FIFA.com. The minnows gained a total of 275 points and climbed 82 ranks to put themselves in 105th. Iraq endured the largest drop, 23 places, and now sit one ahead of the Faroes in 104th. Egypt suffered the biggest drop by points, losing 131 and plummeting 22 spots to 60th.
November's fixtures concluded Europe's international action for the year, with qualifying and friendlies restarting again in March 2015. The African Cup of Nations will be held before this, between Jan. 17-Feb. 8, meaning we can expect some major changes once the new year kicks off.
Germany continue to lead the way despite their ever-changing squad and will be confident of holding onto their perch across the foreseeable future.
