Champions League Tables 2014: Updated Group Standings, Results After Matchday 5

Gianni VerschuerenNov 26, 2014

Matchday 5 of the 2014-15 UEFA Champions League campaign saw a number of teams grab their tickets to the round of 16 amid plenty of goals, late drama and some of the biggest blunders we've seen on the European pitches all year.

Manchester City's come-from-behind 3-2 win over Bayern Munich and Chelsea's 5-0 demolition of Schalke 04 were the top stories on Tuesday, while Wednesday saw Liverpool put themselves in a lot of trouble with a draw against Ludogorets Razgrad and Arsenal beat Borussia Dortmund, 2-0.

Here are the full results of Matchday 5:

Sergio Aguero bagged himself a hat-trick against Bundesliga giants Bayern Munich in City's 3-2 win, ensuring the English champions remain alive in the hunt for a ticket to the knockout stages.

The Bavarians started the round of blunders on Tuesday, gifting City three goals by giving away a head-scratching penalty courtesy of Mehdi Benatia. Xabi Alonso followed that up with a rare errant pass that set up Aguero for his second, before Jerome Boateng clumsily lost the ball for the third.

The Vine of the last goal, courtesy of Bleacher Report UK:

AS Roma gave away a one-goal lead late against CSKA Moscow, meaning there's a three-way tie for second in Group E, with Bayern already qualified.

Chelsea wrapped up qualification for the next round with an easy 5-0 win over Schalke 04, with John Terry, Willian, Didier Drogba and Ramires all scoring for the Blues. Jan Kirchhoff added an own-goal to complete the final score.

Jose Mourinho was understandably satisfied with the result, via the club's Twitter feed:

Former England international Gary Lineker believes the Blues are the only English team with a real shot at winning the tournament this year:

In the same group, Carlos Mane added to the week's long list of horrible misses, courtesy of Bleacher Report UK:

Lionel Messi didn't miss much on Tuesday, scoring a hat-trick to become the Champions League's all-time top scorer. Luis Suarez also bagged his first goal for the Blaugrana, as Barcelona beat APOEL Nicosia, 4-0.

Liverpool gave away the lead in Bulgaria on Wednesday, playing out a 2-2 draw against Razgrad Ludogorets. Dani Abalo opened the score for the hosts after just three minutes, and obviously, Simon Mignolet wasn't planning on missing out on this week's list of football funnies. Bleacher Report UK has the Vine:

Rickie Lambert equalised quickly and Jordan Henderson gave the Reds a first-half lead, but the Bulgarians found an equaliser late in the match, to the dismay of Brendan Rodgers.

Liverpool will now have to beat FC Basel on the final matchday or be relegated to the Europa League (or worse, if Ludogorets pick up points against Real Madrid). The Swiss gave holders Real Madrid a strong challenge, but a single goal from Cristiano Ronaldo was enough for Los Blancos to go home with the win.

Yaya Sanogo scored his first ever competitive goal for Arsenal early at the Emirates, and Alexis Sanchez added a beauty to send the Gunners to the round of 16 with a 2-0 win over Borussia Dortmund. Sports writer Graham Ruthven couldn't believe he had missed so much by being a few minutes late:

Anderlecht recorded an easy 2-0 win over Galatasaray to send the Turks crashing out of Europe, as the Belgians have clinched the Europa League ticket in Group D.

Olympiakos' Roberto gave us arguably the best entry in our list of blunders during his team's 4-0 loss against Atletico Madrid, completely forgetting which team he was actually playing for, via Pitch Invasion:

Mario Mandzukic scored a hat-trick in that match, and a draw against Juventus on the final matchday will suffice to see the Spanish champions through to the next round.

The Bianconeri had little difficulty disposing of Malmo, beating the Swedes, 2-0. Alvaro Morata completes our list of this week's massive blunders with this inexcusable miss, as shared by Khaled Al Nouss:

The Bianconeri can clinch qualification for the next round with a draw or win against Atletico, and victory by two goals or more will see the Italian champions top the group. Olympiakos need to beat Malmo and hope Juventus lose on Matchday 6 to advance.

Benfica's 1-0 loss at Zenit St. Petersburg means the Portuguese giants are officially eliminated, with all other teams in Group D still vying for the final two tickets.
