The 10 Most Embarrassing Own Goals Ever

Ryan BaileyNov 25, 2014

During Werder Bremen's trip to Hamburg last weekend, visiting goalkeeper Raphael Wolf scored an own goal that all parties involved should be thoroughly ashamed of.

Hamburg were leading 1-0 in injury time when they caught Bremen on the break, with four players bearing down on goal waiting to beat Wolf. Somehow, none of them scored, relying on the 'keeper to let the ball bounce in through his hands.

This calamitous own goal inspires our list of humiliating mistakes, which includes the worst moment in the career of Jamie Pollock (above)...

Izaldo (Nautico) vs. Santa Cruz

1 of 10

It is rare that a player takes two attempts to score a horrendous own goal, but that opportunity was seized by Natuico's Izaldo back in March.

During a Brazilian Pernambucano 1 league match with Santa Cruz, Izaldo was lucky that his dreadful clearance cannoned off his own bar. However, seconds later, the hapless defender finished off the job by heading past his bewildered 'keeper.

Vasilis Torosidis (Greece) vs. Romania

2 of 10

Greece qualified for the World Cup in spite of a terrible howler from Vasilis Torosidis in the second leg of their play-off match with Romania.

On the edge of his own area, the Roma star smashed in a shot off the bar that any striker would be proud of.

Jamie Pollock (Manchester City) vs. Queens Park Rangers

3 of 10

At the end of the 1999-00 season, Manchester City faced Queens Park Rangers in a relegation battle that would see one of the teams drop to the third tier of English football.

The Citizens ended up losing their place in the league thanks to a spectaculraly embarrassing own goal from midfielder Jamie Pollock, who beat a QPR player Paul Gascoigne-style before heading into his own net.

Franck Queudrue (Bastia) vs. Lens

4 of 10

It is hard to know what was going through Franck Queudrue's head in the moments before he conceded a terrible own goal for Bastia against Lens in 2001.

Around 40 yards from his goal, the former Fulham and Middlesbrough left-back sent a volley into his own net that was too powerful to be a back pass and in the wrong direction for a clearance.

Festus Baise (Citizen) vs. Sun Hai

5 of 10

It takes a lot of skill and courage to pull off a scorpion kick in the middle of a game. And it takes a lot of skill, courage and stupidity to pull off a scorpion kick when you are a centre-back facing your own net.

Festus Baise discovered this while playing for Chinese side Citizen in December 2011. If he was in the opposite box, this would easily be a goal of the season contender.

Renzo Reanos (Union Comercio) vs. Universitario

6 of 10

Renzo Reanos entered the history books in August 2013 when he scored this unfortunate own goal in the Peruvian Primera Division.

The Union Comercio defender watched a team-mate pull down a Universitario player and kicked the ball into the back of the net in frustration at the impending penalty. However, the referee had yet to blow his whistle for a spot-kick and, playing the advantage rule, gave a goal instead.

Play to the whistle, Renzo.

Christoph Kramer (Borussia Monchengladbach) vs. Borussia Dortmund

7 of 10

Borussia Dortmund were afforded a rare league win earlier this month when Borussia Monchengladbach's Christoph Kramer put a long-range howler in his own net.

In an attempt to play a back pass to goalkeeper Yann Sommer, the German midfielder ended up scoring an impressive-but-mortifying 50-yard lob.

Perhaps the concussion he picked up in the World Cup Final is having some lingering effects...

Tomislav Piplica (Energie Cottbus) vs. Borussia Monchengladbach

8 of 10

Kramer's goal might have been karmic retribution for a mishap that benefited Monchengladbach in 2002.

With a few minutes to go during a trip to Energie Cottbus, Die Borussen were trailing 3-2. However, they earned a bizarre equalizer when Cottbus 'keeper Tomislav Piplica headed the ball back into his own net.

Quite why the shot-stopper didn't put his hands out is anyone's guess.

Wayne Hatswell (Forest Green Rovers) vs. Morecambe

9 of 10

Wayne Hatswell entered own goal infamy during a 2000 FA Cup game between his side Forest Green and Morecambe.

Under very little pressure in his own goalmouth, Hatswell's attempted clearance ended up rifling into the top-right corner of his own net.

Chris Brass (Bury) vs. Darlington

10 of 10

In his first season at Bury, defender Chris Brass endeared himself to the Shakers' faithful by scoring a hilariously embarrassing own goal in a league match with Darlington.

While attempting an overhead clearance, Brass managed to blast the ball into his own face before watching it roll into the net.

They don't come much more humiliating than that.
