Pele led Brazil to World Cup wins in 1958, 1962 and 1970, propelling his name to global recognition in the process. He was awarded FIFA's Player of the Century accolade in 2000, beating the likes of Diego Maradona and Alfredo Di Stefano to the unique prize.
He netted 127 goals in 1959 and 110 in 1961, stats that go some way to highlighting why the sport's governing body recognised him as the greatest. A speedy, clinical forward, Pele's career was defined by tremendous pieces of skill and important goals for both club and country, as highlighted below:
It is testimony to his quality that, in today's terms, the public often discuss whether Lionel Messi or Cristiano Ronaldo's careers are comparable to his.
Although Pele's professional club career only spanned Santos and the New York Cosmos, he captured two Copa Libertadores medals, Campeonato Paulista titles and other domestic Brazilian crowns on his way to stardom.
