"

Republic of Ireland manager Martin O'Neill says assistant Roy Keane has his "full support" following an incident with a member of the public at the team hotel.

Keane Calls Police After Incident, Investigation Ongoing

"Gardai are investigating an incident where officers were called to a location outside a hotel in Portmarknock," a spokesperson told Eoin Murphy and Ali Bracken of the Irish Daily Mail. "No criminal complaint has been made and investigations are ongoing. Medical assistance was rendered."

Daniel McDonnell of the Daily Mail indicates it was Keane who called the police:

The incident happened outside the Links Hotel in Portmarnock, where the Irish are training prior to Friday's European Championship qualifying match with the Scots. According to the Daily Mail report, Keane and an unnamed man exchanged words outside the hotel, with the former Irish national and Manchester United star striking the man when things got heated.

ESPN's Miguel Delaney provides comments from the FAI:

An ambulance was called to the scene, though the severity of the victim's injuries are unclear.

Because there was no criminal complaint filed, it's possible Keane will not be charged. Police are currently investigating the allegations without cooperation from the victim and could bring Keane in for further questioning if they feel it's warranted.

Keane, 43, has been an assistant on Ireland's national team since 2013. He became an assistant at Aston Villa earlier this year, having previously taken spells as the top boss at Sunderland and Ipswich Town. No one involved with Irish football or the Football Association has given a comment on the incident.

Ireland plays Scotland at Hampden Park on Friday evening. Keane, as of the time of writing, is expected to be with the club.
