Indian Super League 2014 Results: Updated Table, Scores and Fixtures for Week 5

Gianni VerschuerenNov 11, 2014

Week 5 of the Indian Super League started off with a clash of play-off favourites, as FC Pune City held Chennaiyin FC to a 1-1 draw at home.

Sitting third and second in the standings, respectively, both clubs look like strong candidates to finish in the top four at the end of the group stage.

Atletico de Kolkata still currently hold the top spot thanks to a superior goal difference. They drew 0-0 with fellow frontrunners Chennaiyin, on Friday.

NorthEast United FC remain just outside the play-off slots after a goalless draw against FC Pune City on Saturday, already their sixth draw of the competition.

Nov. 16: Kerala Blasters Beat Slumping Delhi Dynamos

3 of 8

Delhi Dynamos FC 0-1 Kerala Blasters FC

Penn Orji scored the only goal in Kerala's 1-0 win over Delhi on Sunday, ensuring the Blasters remain in the running for the play-offs and pushing Dynamos further down into the cellar of the Indian Super League.

The hosts once again failed to make the most of their chances and left the Delhi pitch under a rain of boos from the fans, but much of the credit has to go to Kerala goalkeeper David James, who was superb.

Delhi controlled the ball early and managed the first shot on goal through Pavel Elias before a series of corners saw Hans Mulder isolated in front of James. The Dutchman should have opened the score, but he couldn't stay calm and blasted his shot wide.

Iain Hume was the only man capable of providing some danger for the visitors early, but play remained focused in and around the Kerala box. Alessandro Del Piero fired in cross after cross, but none of the hosts' advancing players could connect.

Hume came close to giving Kerala a shock lead just before half-time, but his beautiful flick missed the right top corner by inches. The score was 0-0 after 45 minutes, with Delhi dominating proceedings.

Orji was introduced in the 56th minute and immediately made his presence felt, scoring five minutes later. Hume set the Nigerian up perfectly with a clever little flick, and Orji took a single touch before driving the ball past the outstretched arms of Kristof van Hout.

The visitors took control of the match looking to double their lead, but Milagres Gonsalves' shot lacked the power to trouble the Belgian stopper. James had to produce a great save off a deflected Del Piero free-kick, and Andrew Barisic's header just missed the target.

Gustavo Marmentini produced a beautiful curling effort with time running out, only to watch in horror as James once again came to the rescue, making an acrobatic save to preserve the clean sheet.

It would be the final chance of the match, as the visitors jump back into the top four with the win.

Nov. 15: FC Pune City Hold NorthEast United FC to Draw

4 of 8

NorthEast United FC 0-0 FC Pune City

Hosts NorthEast United dominated possession but couldn't find an opening against Pune City on Saturday, as the ISL saw yet another goalless draw played out between play-off hopefuls.

The result sees Pune inch closer to the duo at the lead of the standings, while NorthEast United sit just outside the top four.

Pritam Singh had the first chance just minutes into the match, directing his shot just wide of the post. The hosts took control of the ball early and worked it well in space, but the final pass always lacked the quality to truly trouble Pune.

Koke's corner found the head of Alen Deory, but the Indian couldn't find the target near the back post. Joen Capdevilla suffered the same fate just minutes later, and missed open headers became somewhat of a recurring theme for the hosts.

Felipe de Castro became the next NorthEast United player to have a go, timing a run to the near post to perfection but sending his effort wide. Rehenesh TP was finally called into action after 26 minutes, denying Davide Colomba.

Kondwani Mtonga fired the best chance of the match wide after a delightful pass and dummy from Koke, before Konstantinos Katsouranis was booked for striking the Spaniard in the face.

NorthEast continued pushing forward and visibly grew frustrated with the visitors' strong defensive efforts, although the hosts' strikers could have done a far better job converting their chances.

Dudu Omagbemi nearly took advantage of one of the few counter attacks set up by Pune, but his headed attempt was well saved by Rehenesh.

Koke should have won it for the hosts in the 83rd minute, finding himself with the ball at his feet and all kinds of time in centre of the box. The defence inexplicably failed to pick him up, but the Spaniard couldn't take advantage of the gift, weakly putting the ball in the arms of the 'keeper.

The visitors will be satisfied with the result, especially given the way NorthEast United dominated possession. These are the kind of matches you have to win at home in order to qualify for the play-offs, and the hosts will be kicking themselves for failing to convert even a single chance.

Nov. 14: Clash of the Frontrunners Ends in Goalless Draw

5 of 8

Atletico de Kolkata 0-0 Chennaiyin FC

The two current biggest hitters in the Indian Super League battled to a defensive 0-0 draw as Chennaiyin FC visited league leaders, Atletico de Kolkata.

A crowd of over 46,000 packed in to Salt Lake Stadium to witness the epic battle but were left short-changed by both team's attacking units.

Neither side were able to be fully inventive or flair driven during the contest and the match was always heading for a draw.

However, Chennaiyin loanee Balwant Singh did find the back of the net after 81 minutes, only to see his effort ruled out for handball—leading to the Indian international striker to be cautioned.

Chennai were under intermittent pressure in the first half, with Ethiopian attacker Fikru Teferra going close in the 21st minute for Atletico.

However, the most interesting part of the first half came as a temporary power failure hit proceedings, causing a 12 minute delay to the match.

The best chance of the game belonged to Atletico's Luis García, in the second half. The Spaniard rattled Gennaro Bracigliano's crossbar from a left footed free-kick, after a foul from former Manchester United defender, Mikael Silvestre.

Atletico's 34-year-old Spanish midfielder Jofre was named "Hero of the Match," as Kolkata remain at the top of the league, with their minimal one goal difference advantage over Chennai.

Nov. 13: Goa Thrash Delhi to Move off Bottom

6 of 8

Delhi Dynamos 1-4 Goa

Goa convincingly won the battle of the bottom-of-the-table sides on Thursday as they thrashed Delhi Dynamos 4-1 at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium to leapfrog their hosts and move to seventh in the Indian Super League.

Youness Bengelloun added to his opening-half strike just after the break to give Goa a commanding lead before a Robert Pires penalty and a Tolgay Ozbey took the game away from Delhi.

A consolation Gustavo dos Santos goal from the spot did little to boost the home side's spirits as they dropped to the bottom of the table.

The opening exchanges saw both sides have chances but it was Kristof Van Hout in the Dynamos goal who had the most to do.

Goa broke the deadlock in the 18th minute as Frenchman Bengelloun bundled the ball homewards after Van Hout had saved a strong Peter Carvalho header from a corner.

Only 1-0 down at the break, Delhi were certainly still in with a chance, but defender Bengelloun claimed his second three minutes into the second half to establish a two-goal cushion.

Andre Santos's free-kick was met well by Bengelloun as he rose highest to head home.

The hosts' misery was compounded only minutes later when Ozbey was brought down in the box by Van Hout with Pires converting the resulting penalty for his first goal of the tournament.

Ozbey then added a fourth after a terrific run which got him on the end of a fine piece of play from Goa, and the Aussie slotted home.

Dos Santos' consolation penalty came after Debabrata Roy handled in the box, and although Delhi finished the game well, the damage had already been done.

Next up for the Dynamos is Kerala Blasters at home on Sunday while Goa travel to Mumbai City the following day.

Both teams are still somewhat off the pace at the bottom of the standings but there is much potential for shooting up the table if a couple of wins can be strung together.

Nov. 12: Kerala Blasters Held at Home by Mumbai City

7 of 8

Kerala Blasters 0-0 Mumbai City

David James did his part to ensure Kerala Blasters kept a clean sheet in Wednesday's meeting against Mumbai City, but the hosts were ineffective at the other end of the pitch, running to a 0-0 disappointment.

A win would have seen Kerala move above their opponents and into third place, leaving Mumbai City as the more satisfied of the two, solidifying their position at fourth for now.

It was an edgy encounter by every definition in Kochi, with both teams separated by the slimmest of margins in shots attempted, possession and corners, per the official Indian Super League website.

However, neither team could find the breakthrough in what was the fifth Indian Super League draw in just four days.

Prior to the match, Mumbai City head coach Peter Reid was quoted by the Indian Super League website as expecting a tight fixture, and that was precisely the kind of encounter that materialised:

"

To be fair, in the previous game in Mumbai, it was a great free kick that won it (the game). It was a fairly close game. We know it will be difficult even with the results we have had lately. I know David (James), Trevor (Morgan) and some of the players really well, and I know that they are strong, well organized and I think that tomorrow’s game is going to be difficult.

"

Nicolas Anelka sits as Reid's top scorer with two goals so far this term, but the Frenchman was unable to find the breaks needed, dropping deeper as to play a more provisional role, per the club's official Twitter account:

"

Anelka has taken up the role of a play maker by playing lower down the pitch. What do you think of this tactic? pic.twitter.com/dXhw9fDXUU

— Mumbai City FC (@MumbaiCityFC) November 12, 2014"

Mumbai are yet to find any great strength in attack nor defence during their inaugural Indian Super League season, and Reid will be hoping to unearth some identity as the campaign progresses.

The same might be said for Kerala, who have scored five goals but conceded six in their first eight games, this their fourth outing in which they've failed to find the back of the net.

Nov. 11: Pune City and Chennaiyin Play to a Draw

8 of 8

FC Pune City 1-1 Chennaiyin FC

Week 5's first top clash didn't produce a new league leader, as Pune City and Chennaiyin played out a 1-1 draw, keeping Atletico de Kolkata at the top of the ISL standings.

Kostas Katsouranis gave the hosts the lead in the ninth minute, but John Stiven Mendoza pulled his side level early in the second half.

Elano Blumer, the current Golden Boot leader, missed a penalty just after Katsouranis had opened the scoring.

The match saw a quick start with plenty of attack intentions from both clubs, and Mendoza nearly struck first for Chennaiyin, failing to get his shot on goal. The hosts immediately struck back and took a shock lead, Katsouranis timing his run perfectly to connect with a cross and rifle home.

Chennaiyin took control of the match after the early setback and had a strong chance to pull level through Harmanjot Khabra, who directed a header straight at the goalkeeper. The ball went on the penalty spot a minute later, but Elano completely muffed his attempt, steering it well wide of the goal.

Arindam Bhattacharya was the hero in goal for the hosts, and when Elano finally managed to beat him, his free-kick hit the crossbar. It was a miracle the score was just 1-0 at the half, as Pune City had a couple of decent chances as well.

The pace dropped in the second half, but the visitors still found an equaliser after 58 minutes. Elano played a long ball in for Mendoza, who found himself isolated in front of goal after a swift combination and easily slipped the ball past Bhattacharya .
