Sunday Recap

Atletico Madrid missed the chance to leapfrog Barcelona in the La Liga standings, as they lost 2-1 to Real Sociedad at the Anoeta. Mario Mandzukic bagged his fifth goal of the season to give the champions an early lead, but a swift response from Carlos Vela gave the Basque side parity.

Things could have been worse for the Rojiblancos before half time, but they were spared by a magnificent piece of defending by Diego Godin, per Liga BBVA:

Five minutes after the break things did take a downward turn for Atletico though, as Guilherme Siqueira saw red for Diego Simeone’s side. And they paid the price in earnest, as a header from Imanol Agirretxe eight minutes from time secured all three points for the hosts.

This latest away defeat continues a worrying stretch of form for Atletico on the road, as noted here by ESPN FC’s Dermot Corrigan:

For Sociedad this was a timely win and in beating Atletico, they’ve now toppled both of the Madrid giants at the Anoeta this season. David Moyes, who is reportedly set to make a decision on whether to take the La Real managers job, per The Guardian, must have been watching on with intrigue.

Valencia will feel as though they too missed an opportunity to make ground on the leaders after they were held to a 0-0 draw by Athletic Bilbao. The Basque outfit finally seem to be getting their act together after a terrible start to the campaign, and given their perpetual problems against the Mestalla outfit, you suspect they will have been delighted with a point, per Opta Jose:

Sid Lowe of The Guardian paid tribute to Ernesto Valverde’s team, who have now notched two wins and a draw in their last three La Liga encounters:

Valencia seemed to run out of ideas as this game wore on, but they shouldn’t be too downtrodden after this one. They’re currently scaling a lofty height of third place in Spain’s top flight and things could have been worse for them here had it not been for a miraculous save from Diego Alves, per Fiaz Hamsath:

Another side ruing missed opportnuities in Week 11 was Sevilla, who conceded another late goal to draw 1-1 with Levante. Vitolo gave the Andalusians the lead in the first half, but Unai Emery’s team were unable to kill off their opponents. Naturally, they were made to pay, when Victor Casadesus prodded home a late equaliser from close range.

It was a well-earned point for Levante, one that takes them out of the relegation zone. Like Valencia, Sevilla shouldn’t be too downhearted after dropping points in Week 11; even after letting two points slip against lowly opposition, Los Che are just four points back on league leaders Real Madrid and right in the mix for those coveted Champions League spots.

Barcelona's domestic struggles continued on Saturday, but same late heroics from Neymar and Jordi Alba saw the Catalans salvage all three points against Almeria.

The hosts had taken a shock lead in the first half through Thievy Bifouma, finishing off a swift counter attack after Lionel Messi lost the ball in the attacking third.

The Blaugrana had dominated possession up to that point and had several strong chances to take the lead, but Messi and Company couldn't convert. When they did find the space they needed, the woodwork denied Barcelona several times.

Luis Enrique introduced Luis Suarez and Neymar at half-time, and the duo eventually made the difference. The Uruguayan first smashed a volley onto the crossbar before creating the chance that led to Neymar's equaliser in the 73rd minute.

He was also heavily involved in the buildup for Jordi Alba's winner, drawing praise from Goal's Ben Hayward:

As shared by Barcastuff, Barcelona manager Enrique touched on the importance of winning matches in which the team's performance isn't up to standards:

ESPN FC's Dermot Corrigan believes the pressure is starting to get to the Asturian:

Barcelona struggled on Saturday, but like Enrique said, good teams find ways to win bad matches. Suarez's lively performance will give the Uruguay international confidence for the future, and if he hits form, the Catalans' attack will become even deadlier.

Real Madrid's attack is just fine, thrashing Rayo Vallecano 5-1 at the Bernabeu. Making his first start after returning from injury, Gareth Bale opened the score for the hosts inside the first 10 minutes with an easy tap-in.

Sergio Ramos doubled the hosts' advantage, and while Alberto Bueno was able to pull one back for Rayo just before half-time, Los Blancos were never troubled after the break.

Toni Kroos restored the two-goal gap with a clinical finish from distance and Karim Benzema made it 4-1 (albeit from an offside position) before Cristiano Ronaldo put the final score on the board.

The Portugal international's scoring form in 2014-15 is starting to take on absurd proportions:

Elche and Getafe played out a scoreless draw, as did Celta Vigo and Granada.

Malaga rallied in the second half to beat Eibar 2-1, with Nordin Amrabat converting a last-minute penalty to give the hosts the win. Mikel Arruabarrena had given the visitors the lead just before half-time, but Juanmi and Amrabat turned the situation around for Malaga, who enter the top six with the result.

Friday Recap

A forward stole the headlines for all the wrong reasons during Deportivo La Coruna's 0-0 draw against Cordoba, as Helder Postiga had a nightmare outing that lasted less than 30 minutes.

The Portuguese veteran started his night by conceding a penalty in the 12th minute, but his goalkeeper Fabri bailed him out by saving Federico Cartabia's effort, as shared by Michael Jacobsen:

Deportivo had controlled the match up until that point but showed little initiative in the attacking third, and the yellow card Postiga received for the penalty foul limited his effectiveness in the centre of the pitch.

The hosts tried to speed up the tempo and turned the match into a physical battle, with cards coming fast. The 32-year-old knew he had to keep his head down, something he has learned how to do through the years, via OptaJose:

Inigo Lopez played the former Tottenham star tight, and Postiga lost his cool in the 29th minute, leading to a shoving match.

BeIN Sports' Chris Moar made no excuses for the Deportivo man:

The dismissal effectively killed any momentum the visitors had built, and both teams were content to watch the clock count down and go into half-time tied 0-0. Fans expected Cordoba to push forward in the second half, but the hosts put together a dreadful 45 minutes, showing absolutely nothing.

Deportivo manager Victor Fernandez also quickly decided he was satisfied with a draw, opting not to take any risks and introducing midfielders rather than scorers. Under a chorus of boos, the final 45 minutes featured little creativity, and the final score was a logical result.

Lastwordonsports.com's Jake Davies put it best:

Manager Miroslav Djukic spoke of "the new face" of Cordoba before the match, as reported by Inside La Liga's Heath Chesters, and to say the hosts failed to deliver would be an understatement:

"

We need to show the fans the new face of this team and also demonstrate our new way of playing, as the way we want to be. A team that looks for victory from the very first minute.

The kind of game I’m expecting is that Deportivo permit us control of the ball, so they can then hit us on the counter-attack. We’re prepared to take control of the game and when they get hold of the ball, we also have our strengths to counter that. We’re not fixating on what our rivals can do though. We’re working on shaping our own style.

"

Postiga's red card obviously killed the match early, but the reluctance of either manager to take control of the second half is telling for this year's battle for relegation.

There are currently seven teams either inside or one point above the relegation zone, and the struggle to avoid the drop will be a fierce one for most of these teams.

Cordoba and Deportivo had a chance to alter their fate on Friday, but neither team showed anything that would make fans believe they're deserving of staying in La Liga.
