UEFA Champions League 2014: Updated Groups, Tracking Qualified Teams for Last 16

Rory MarsdenNov 5, 2014

Bayern Munich, Barcelona, Paris Saint-Germain and Porto all guaranteed places in the last 16 of the Champions League on Wednesday as they collected vital wins in the fourth round of group fixtures.

Real Madrid and Borussia Dortmund also successfully saw themselves through to the first knockout round with victories on Tuesday.

With four games played in this year's tournament, those qualified already have the terrific advantage of being able to rotate players as they wish for the remaining two matches.

Bayern Top Group

Pep Guardiola's Bayern Munich managed to confirm top spot in their group with two games remaining after a 2-0 win over Roma on Wednesday.

In a much more even game than two weeks ago, when the Bundesliga champions ran out 7-1 away winners, Franck Ribery and Mario Gotze's goals confirmed the necessary three points at the Allianz Arena.

The two qualifiers from Group F were confirmed—though the positioning is still to be decided—as PSG and Barcelona both got the wins they needed for a confirmed place in the knockout rounds.

Barca prevailed 2-0 over Ajax, Lionel Messi scoring twice to equal Raul as the competition's all-time highest goalscorer having netted 71 times. Although, it was not the La Liga giants' best performance, per Spanish football writer Dermot Corrigan:

Meanwhile, PSG's 1-0 win over Apoel Nicosia, thanks to Edinson Cavani's strike, saw them go top of the group, but the Ligue 1 side's clash with Barca in early December will likely be the key to deciding the eventual group standings.

Porto saw themselves through as they beat Athletic Bilbao 2-0 away after goals from Jackson Martinez and Yacine Brahimi. The Portuguese side's path was confirmed as Shakhtar Donetsk beat BATE Borisov 5-0.

Real on Autopilot

Los Blancos had an easy 1-0 win at home against a weakened Liverpool on Tuesday, thanks to a Karim Benzema strike, to book their place in the knockout rounds with a fourth win.

Carlo Ancelotti's side have effectively cruised their way through Group B, their biggest test surprisingly coming from minnows Ludogorets, whom they only defeated 2-1.

Despite the narrow margin of victory against the Reds, they dominated proceedings while never hitting top gear, per Sky Sports News HQ, and the defending champions look in ominous form:

Meanwhile, Dortmund defied their horrendous Bundesliga travails—which see them currently in the relegation zone—to thrash Galatasaray 4-1, the Germans continuing against European competition in a way they simply cannot domestically, per Squawka:

With Arsenal throwing away a three-goal lead to draw with Anderlecht 3-3 and fail to confirm their own qualification, Dortmund are almost guaranteed top spot in the group as they sit five points clear of the Gunners.

Dortmund do have to travel to the Emirates in the next round of fixtures but they simply need to avoid losing to confirm the ever-important top spot which should give them an easier draw in the last 16.
