Reus, Lewandowski and the 10 Biggest on-Pitch Snubs
At the conclusion of Saturday's Klassiker between Bayern Munich and Borussia Dortmund, Marco Reus was not a happy man.
He had scored the opening goal, but an inevitable Bayern win followed, leaving the talented winger in no mood to give his former colleague Robert Lewandowski a hug. Whether he felt hurt by the Polish striker's defection or he was upset by the result is unclear, but it was a slight all the same.
This Bundesliga rebuff leads our list of the biggest on-pitch snubs in football...
Marco Reus and Robert Lewandowski
1 of 10First they took Mario away and it broke his heart. Then Robert left the following season. It seemed like all of Marco Reus' best buddies were upping sticks to Bavaria, leaving the 25-year-old confused, upset and unwilling to hug it out.
Clearly, something has changed since Lewandowski and Reus' last interaction.
Perhaps Reus will reciprocate the embrace next season when they're both playing on the same team again...
Andy Cole and Teddy Sheringham
2 of 10
Andy Cole and Teddy Sheringham formed a formidable strike partnership at Manchester United in the 1990s, but they never actually breathed a word to one another.
Why? Well, according to Cole, their hatred stemmed from a snub during an England game. When Cole made his debut for the Three Lions in 1995, he replaced Sheringham as a substitute.
Teddy, then at Spurs, apparently completely ignored Cole and embarrassed him, thus sparking a mutual hatred that lasts to this day.
Roy Keane, Paul Lambert and Jose Mourinho
3 of 10Jose Mourinho's habit of leaving the field of play a few minutes before the end of a half appears to infuriate some of his rivals.
When Chelsea beat Aston Villa 3-0 earlier this season, the Special One decided he had seen enough, but wanted to shake hands with his opposite numbers.
Lambert explained that he would only shake hands at full time, while Roy Keane simply kept staring forward, mentally adding something else to the extensive list of things that make him seethe with anger.
Mohamed Salah and Maccabi Tel Aviv
4 of 10During both legs of Basel's 2013-14 Champions League qualifiers with Maccabi Tel Aviv, Mohamed Salah refused to shake hands with any player from the Israeli side.
In the first match, the Egyptian avoided the pre-match lineup by going to the sidelines to boot on his boots, while he offered only fist bumps in the return leg.
The winger—who now plays for Chelsea, a side owned by Jewish businessman Roman Abramovich—denied any anti-semitism as reported by The Daily Mail, but insisted he "felt pressurised to appease some extreme sections of the Egyptian community."
Pep Guariola and Caleb Porter
5 of 10In August 2014, Bayern Munich were defeated by an MLS All-Star team in Portland.
It was a glorified friendly, but a few bad tackles in the game left Pep Guardiola so incensed that he refused to shake the hand of his MLS counterpart Caleb Porter at full time. Instead, the Spaniard gave him a dismissive wag of his finger, before consoling his own players.
Porter's repeated attempts to shake Pep's hand were rebuffed, creating the impression of a very sore loser.
Alvaro Arbeloa and Iker Casillas
6 of 10This one technically didn't happen on the field but Iker Casillas' reaction is too priceless not to include.
Before the first leg of Real Madrid's Spanish Super Cup clash with Atletico Madrid in August 2014, Alvaro Arbeloa walked down the tunnel greeting each of his teammates—except Casillas, whom he apparently completely ignored.
The goalkeeper was left standing with a camera pointing at him, appearing a little embarrassed.
Some suggested the snub was due to Arbeloa being a fervent supporter of Jose Mourinho, while Casillas was famously dropped and outcast by the Portuguese manager.
Wayne Bridge and John Terry
7 of 10
During the 2009-10 season, it came to light that John Terry impregnated his former teammate Wayne Bridge's girlfriend. Chelsea's meeting with Bridge's Manchester City in February 2010, therefore, became all about how the players would react to one another.
The cuckolded left back got the animosity ball rolling by refusing to shake JT's hand in the pre-match line-ups.
Patrice Evra and Luis Suarez
8 of 10
Following a match between Manchester United and Liverpool in October 2011, Luis Suarez was fined and banned for using what was deemed to be racial abuse against Patrice Evra.
In Liverpool's meeting with United on February 2012—the first one since the Uruguayan's ban—Suarez appeared to snub Evra's handshake, causing the Frenchman to grab his arm. In solidarity, Rio Ferdinand also appeared to snub Suarez.
It was a messy affair, over which Suarez still claims to be upset as reported by The Daily Mail.
Aston Villa's Mascot and Manchester City's Mascot
9 of 10It became clear that all these handshake sagas were having a negative effect on the children who look up to Premier League players during an Aston Villa clash with Manchester City that took place the day after Suarez's snub.
Walking down the pre-match line, Villa's mascot learned by example and decided to spurn the hand of his City counterpart. A Villa statement claimed the youngster was "overawed" but it became clear at this point that Premier League handshake snubs had jumped the shark.
Mauro Icardi and Maxi Lopez
10 of 10Serie A had its very own handshake scandal in April when Sampdoria faced Inter Milan.
Mauro Icardi and Maxi Lopez once both played for Sampdoria, and were good friends who bonded over their shared Argentinean nationality. However, it then emerged that Icardi—nine years Lopez's junior—was having an affair with his model wife Wanda Nara.
The pair have since fallen out, with Icardi stoking the fire by getting a tattoo of Lopez's kids (after Lopez had complained about him posting pictures of the kids on social media) and eventually marrying Nara.
When the pair met in April, with Icardi playing at Inter, Lopez understandably rebuffed a handshake offering.
To make matters worse for Lopez, he missed a penalty in the game while Icardi scored twice.
