EPL Results Week 10: Premier League Scores, Top Scorers and 2014 Table Tracker

Tom SunderlandNov 1, 2014

Although a Manchester derby waits in the wings, Matchday 10 made no sacrifice in entertainment on Saturday, with upsets and close calls making for a fine start to the weekend's proceedings.

QPR did their best in attempting to upset the Chelsea applecart, but Jose Mourinho's Blues ultimately prevailed to maintain their spot at the table's summit.

There was movement across the division, however, as we break down all the Week 10 drama thus far.

Manchester City Topple Red Devils in Derby Clash

The most anticipated fixture of Week 10 was Sunday's encounter between Manchester City and Manchester United, with Manuel Pellegrini's men emerging from the rivalry as 1-0 victors.

Chris Smalling was sent off in the first half after picking up two yellow cards, but Louis van Gaal's men remained vigilant heading in at the break with the match still scoreless.

That all changed in the 63rd minute, however, when Sergio Aguero latched onto a ball inside from Gael Clichy, steering his shot past David de Gea, who had already pulled off some remarkable saves to keep his side level.

Clichy was nominated WhoScored.com's Man of the Match for his display, United still pressing their own imprint on the game despite playing with 10 men for the majority:

Despite the three points, though, talkSPORT's Andy Goldstein says City won't win the Premier League title, this display apparently having no success in convincing him otherwise:

Van Gaal's side now sit 10th in the table, having picked up just 13 points from their first 10 outings of the campaign and looking unlikely to challenge for a top four place.

STV's Stefan Bienkowski says David Moyes, axed close to end of last season, was a superior manager at this point in his term at Old Trafford:

City remain six points off leaders Chelsea, but will certainly take heart from their triumph, the derby win coming at an essential time after they lost their two previous matches in a row.

Saturday's Key Results

Newcastle United 1-0 Liverpool

It was far from Saturday's most entertaining display in terms of goalmouth action, but Newcastle continue to improve thanks to their 1-0 win over Liverpool, Ayoze Perez grabbing the game's only goal.

Both teams had their chances, but the northeast hosts eventually made the only one that matters count. Mario Balotelli was unable to have any great threat on Tim Krul's lines, and as Who Ate All The Pies illustrates, took a brutal knock from Daryl Janmaat for his troubles:

Alan Pardew praised the "collective spirit" of his side, per BBC Sport, the Magpies moving up to 11th as a result of their fourth consecutive win.

The Mirror's Brian McNally suggests this was a result indicative of Liverpool's fall from grace, however, more than it was any deserved brilliance on Newcastle's part:

Liverpool now look toward a midweek fixture against Real Madrid, who are enjoying an 11-match unbeaten streak and will be no hospitable hosts for their Merseyside visitors.

Chelsea 2-1 QPR

Goals from Oscar and Eden Hazard ensured Chelsea were able to take maximum points from Saturday's west London derby, although Harry Redknapp's side looked as though they might manage a scare along the way.

Charlie Austin equalised in the second half to cancel out Oscar's opener before Hazard was felled in the QPR box to seal the win from the penalty spot. Despite the tight margins of the victory, Mourinho found positives in the display, per the official Premier League Twitter account:

It was by no means the prettiest performance Chelsea will produce this term, and with Diego Costa still making his way back to full fitness, the Blues struggled for a finishing threat in stretches.

However, the three points will be the only thing that Stamford Bridge is concerned about at present, their lead at the summit still standing at four points.

Hull City 0-1 Southampton

Top-four raiders Southampton remain very much in the race to claim a European finish this term, and in similar fashion to Chelsea, their win at the KC Stadium was about substance over style.

Victor Wanyama swept home early from 35 yards to give the Saints what would eventually prove to be the game's winner. Squawka depicts just how strong the south-coast outfit have looked of late:

Manager Ronald Koeman was clearly over the moon with his in-form cast of stars, too, posting a mid-flight image of the players on their way back to Southampton:

Southampton look likely to feature as this year's shock candidate for the top spots, and just as many have done in the past, their current challenge is showing no signs of letting up just yet.

However, one inevitably has that shade of doubt in assessing just when the fairytale must—if at all—come to an end. For now, though, the Saints will enjoy their claim to fame and seek to ensure it lasts until May and beyond.
