Sunday Recap

Manchester City beat Manchester United 1-0 in their first derby of the season, thanks to a second-half goal from Sergio Aguero.

The hosts took full advantage of Chris Smalling's red card in the first half, keeping possession after the break and converting one of their many chances in the 63rd minute. Aguero steered the ball past David de Gea with his first touch, giving the Spaniard no chance.

As shared by Squawka, the Argentina international is scoring at an impressive pace this season:

Despite there only being one goal, the match was filled with drama and controversy. Smalling's red card was a poor decision from the defender, making a lunging tackle after he had already been booked previously.

Belgium international Marouane Fellaini was also involved in an incident with Aguero, where it looked as though he might have spit on the forward. Louis van Gaal denied his midfielder did such a thing, as shared by The Guardian's Daniel Taylor:

The home fans, meanwhile, felt aggrieved no penalty was awarded for multiple challenges inside the box, including an instance where Fellaini appeared to kick Aguero's standing leg from underneath him.

Sports Illustrated's Grant Wahl didn't like the decisions:

The Citizens still walked out with the win, however, keeping pace with Chelsea near the top of the standings.

There was more controversy in Sunday's other fixture, as Aston Villa gave up a lead against Tottenham, losing 2-1 after a Harry Kane stoppage-time goal.

Andreas Weimann had given the hosts the lead early in the first half and the match turned into a physical battle in the second, with multiple incidents going unpunished. Belgian striker Christian Benteke was eventually sent off for putting his hands on the face of Ryan Mason, with the latter selling it as a slap.

Mason appeared to initiate the contact by leaning into Benteke's face with his forehead, and former German football star Dietmar Hamann didn't agree with the decision to give the Belgian his marching orders:

With the man advantage, Tottenham equalised through Nacer Chadli before Kane's free-kick in stoppage time took a wicked deflection, wrong-footing Brad Guzan.

The three points see Tottenham leap over Everton and within three points of the European spots, while Aston Villa sit just two points above the relegation zone.

Saturday Recap

League leaders Chelsea didn't dazzle against Queens Park Rangers, but a late Eden Hazard penalty gave the Blues the win and another three-pointer, as Jose Mourinho and his troops are starting to run away with the Premier League title.

ESPN FC's Ian Macintosh said what everyone was thinking after the match:

Beating title contenders in high-profile matches is one thing, but titles are often won and lost against some of the league's smaller teams, and winning the occasional ugly match is a tried and tested recipe for long-term success.

Mourinho knows it, and Saturday's fixture was another prime example. Changing his squad's formation to a 4-4-2 in search of a late winner, the Blues did what others, like Manchester City, have failed to do in 2014-15—show a sense of urgency at the right time.

The Blues are undefeated, hold a nine-point gap over defending champions City and have already faced a number of direct competitors. Title favourites? You bet.

Liverpool have dropped out of that conversation with another disappointing loss, this time at the hands of Newcastle United. The Reds are a mess right now, and via BBC's Ben Smith, things could get worse in the next week or so:

Brendan Rodgers' squad is playing uninspired, drab football, the exact opposite of the young and exciting team we came to love last season. Plenty of turnover in the summer meant there would always be a learning curve in 2014-15, but right now, the Reds look like they're not even trying.

Rodgers admits there's a problem, via LiverpoolFC.com's James Carroll:

"

I came here to bring in a way of working that creates and scores goals. It's something that's not really working for us at the moment. But the players are very committed to their work, they're working very hard.

It was unfortunate today - we made a mistake and got punished for it. There's no magic formula, you've just got to keep working well with the players that we've got and continue to hope that you get that bit of luck, and that confidence in the final third of the pitch can return.

"

Liverpool's loss is Newcastle's gain, of course. Just a couple of weeks after the team's fans wanted Alan Pardew's head on a stake, the Magpies have won three in a row, beating contenders Tottenham and Liverpool in the process.

The spirit of Halloween? These fans seem to think so, via BBC Sport:

Southampton's 1-0 win over Hull City means the Saints remain Chelsea's closest competitors, but Saturday's hard-fought win has far bigger implications.

Hull had held Arsenal and Liverpool to draws in back-to-back fixtures, and Southampton's results establishes Ronald Koeman's squad as the real deal. Few teams walk out of the KC Stadium with three points—if you weren't on the Southampton bandwagon yet, perhaps Saturday's match will convince you.

Alexis Sanchez scored a brace in Arsenal's 3-0 win over Burnley, and while fans would expect the Gunners to walk all over the Premier League newcomers, the manner in which Arsene Wenger's boys saw out the game should give the team plenty of confidence.

The Gunners haven't had a perfect season, and injuries have taken their toll, but on Saturday, the right players stepped up when it was needed. Just as Burnley started to put pressure on the hosts, Calum Chambers scored the 2-0, taking all of the wind out of the visitors' sails.

Manchester City and Manchester United will renew their rivalry and Tottenham will visit Aston Villa on Sunday, before Sunderland and Crystal Palace close out Week 10 of the 2014-15 Premier League season on Monday.
