ATP World Tour Finals 2014: Updated Race to London Rankings, Points, Qualifiers

Stuart ClarkeOct 27, 2014

Andy Murray's nail-biting victory over Tommy Robredo in the Valencia Open final all but guaranteed his place at the ATP Tour Finals, but there's still all to play for in the Race to London.

With No. 3 Rafael Nadal confirming his season is over due to required appendix surgery (via BBC Sport), there are six players fighting for four remaining spots in the season-ending Tour Finals, a race which will conclude in Paris this week.

Novak Djokovic, Roger Federer and Stanislas Wawrinka have already secured their places in London thanks to sufficient ranking points, while seventh-place Marin Cilic is guaranteed a place thanks to his U.S. Open win.

This week's Paris Masters tournament brings together all of the big names, with 1,000 points on offer for the champion, double the amount Murray won in Valencia, with 600 points the prize for reaching the final.

1. Novak Djokovic - 9,010
2. Roger Federer - 8,520
3. Rafael Nadal - 6,835
4. Stan Wawrinka - 4,805
5. Andy Murray - 4,295
6. Kei Nishikori - 4,265
7. Marin Cilic - 4,150
8. Tomas Berdych - 4,105
9. David Ferrer - 3,865
10. Milos Raonic - 3,840
11. Grigor Dimitrov - 3,565

After the U.S. Open, Murray vowed not to overexert himself to try to qualify for the Tour Finals as his comeback from a troublesome back injury continued (per Mike Dickson of the Daily Mail), but having competed in each of the last five weeks, he now looks assured of a place, unlike several of his rivals:

"

The arithmetic is infernal, but it will take stellar Paris performances from Tomas Berdych, David Ferrer, Milos Raonic and Grigor Dimitrov to pull off the mathematical miracle required.

"

Kei Nishikori's breakout season is also showing no signs of abating, with the Japanese athlete winning his home tournament in Tokyo in early October.

But as reported on Sky Sports, Nishikori's draw in Paris this week could have been kinder:

"

He may have to beat Valencia runner-up Tommy Robredo and home favourite Jo-Wilfried Tsonga just to set up a quarter-final clash with Ferrer – and that could be a winner-takes all match as far as London is concerned.

"

Berdych didn't have the best of times in Valencia last week, losing in straight sets in the first round to Pablo Andujar.

But the Czech's route to the quarter-finals looks to be among the easiest of those in the hunt for a place in London, with a last-eight clash with Wawrinka on the cards should both players progress.

Ninth-place Ferrer sits in the most precarious position on the list, on the cusp of being eliminated if he delivers a poor performance in Paris.

But the Spaniard is in good form heading into the Masters tournament, having reached the semi-final in Valencia and the final in Vienna the previous week—defeated both times by Murray.

Raonic and Dimitrov are both now long shots to make London, especially given the tough draw that faces the Canadian.
