WTA Tour Finals Championships 2014 Results: Daily Scores, Groups, Draw Schedule

Rory MarsdenOct 20, 2014

The season-ending WTA Tour Finals Championships kicked off Monday in Singapore with the world's top women's tennis players fighting it out for glory.

The top eight players of the season qualified for the event with Serena Williams leading a pack including Maria Sharapova, Petra Kvitova, Simona Halep, Eugenie Bouchard, Agnieszka Radwanska, Ana Ivanovic and Caroline Wozniacki.

Williams—the 2014 U.S. Open champion—is aiming for her third consecutive victory in the event and her fifth overall and the American world No. 1 is raring to go, per The Associated Press, via Yahoo Sports:

"I don't care who I play, to be perfectly honest with you," Williams said. "You can put me against anybody at this point, I'm ready."

Of the other contenders, only Kvitova and Sharapova have also claimed the prestigious gong in previous years as they won the title in 2011 and 2004 respectively.

The eight women are split into two round-robin groups for the first rounds of play, with the top two proceeding from each pool to the semi-finals.

Debutants Halep and Bouchard join Williams and Ivanovic in the Red group while Radwanska, Wozniacki, Kvitova and Sharapova make up the White group.

The Singapore Indoor Stadium is a new venue for the WTA Finals after three years in Istanbul but should prove a big draw.

Sharapova could end the season as the world No. 1 if she wins every match on her way to tournament victory, but Kvitova, and obviously Williams, will likely prove her main contenders.

Read on for daily scores, groups and scheduling for what is set to be a week of terrific tennis in Singapore.

Oct. 26: Serena Williams Wins WTA Tour Finals Title for Third Consecutive Year

2 of 8

Serena Williams retained her WTA Tour Finals singles crown on Sunday thanks to a comprehensive, straight-sets victory over Simona Halep on Sunday.

The American lost out to Halep earlier in the round-robin format and came into the final with a point to prove, which she certainly did by romping to a 6-3, 6-0 triumph.

While it ended up being a simple victory for Williams, it was touch-and-go in the first set, as Halep was the first to draw blood with a break in Game 3.

However, Williams bit back brilliantly, winning the remainder of her opponent’s service games in the match to close out the opener 6-3.

From then on, the 33-year-old simply stole the show, displaying phenomenal spells of tennis that the Romanian couldn’t handle.

The groundstrokes were of a totally different class to what Halep was producing, and they were backed up with some exceptional, albeit uncharacteristic, work at the net.

The 6-0 scoreline in the second set means that Williams gets her hands on the WTA Tour Finals trophy for the fifth time in her career and ends the year as World No. 1 thanks to Maria Sharapova crashing out in the earlier rounds.

Such achievements were cause for celebration, and the American said to the official WTA website that she’s elated to have overcome such a fierce competitor:

"

She was playing so well at the beginning and I told myself to just relax and once I did that I started playing better and making my shots.  I lost to her a couple of days ago so I knew she was capable of playing really well, but I knew I had to play better if I wanted to win. I wasn't even sure if I'd be able to play here and now I've won the Billie Jean King Trophy again—it's an amazing feeling.

"

Elsewhere, in the doubles tournament, Cara Black and Sania Mirza breezed through the final against defending champions Hsieh Su-Wei and Peng Shuai, 6-1, 6-0.

Black and Mirza have rode their luck at times during the tournament, twice snatching victory from the jaws of defeat, but they were in tip-top form on Sunday.

From the very first break to make it 2-1 in the opening set, the champions simply dominated proceedings and rarely broke a sweat on their way to a victory that took just 59 minutes.

Oct. 25: Serena Williams Sets Up Singapore Title Defence Against Simona Halep

Singles Semi-Finals

Serena Williams defeats Caroline Wozniacki: 2-6, 6-3, 7-6

Simona Halep defeats Agnieszka Radwanska: 6-2, 6-2

Serena Williams will feature in her third consecutive final at the WTA Tour Finals after recording a memorable comeback victory over Caroline Wozniacki on Saturday.

There, she'll go up against Romania's Simona Halep, who beat Agnieszka Radwanska to earn a final berth in her maiden appearance at these championships.

Having already beaten Williams during the round-robin stage in what she described as "the best match of my life," Halep will feel confident in her ability to upset the American once again.

Williams will be tired from a draining encounter with Wozniacki, too, where she was forced to come from a set down in order to progress.

It was in the third set that drama rose to its highest, though, as Williams and Wozniacki laid on a majestic head-to-head, the latter at one stage leading the tie-break 4-1.

Her opponent would hit back, however, and Williams responded with five successive points before claiming her victory. BBC Sport quotes the reigning champion as giving a sympathetic reaction to Wozniacki's demise:

"Caroline played a great match, it was really difficult today. I feel so bad. She's the only one undefeated (after the group stages) in this tournament and she deserved to win."

Halep's semi-final wasn't nearly as complicated, with the WTA Tour Finals debutant triumphing in straight sets, losing only four games along the way.

It took Halep just 67 minutes to overcome Radwanska, whose she broke five times en route to the win.

However, it would be folly for the 23-year-old to expect an automatic repeat victory over Williams, who is sure to bring a new sense of fury into Sunday's clash following her defeat earlier this week.

Williams showed some of that anger upon losing a first set to Wozniacki on Saturday, smashing her racquet after succumbing in the first set. She'll undoubtedly hope to take some of that aggression out on Halep, but a sense of calm must be conjured.

Caroline Wozniacki defeats Petra Kvitova: 6-2, 6-3

Red Group

Ana Ivanovic defeats Simona Halep: 7-6(7), 3-6, 6-3

World No. 2 Maria Sharapova crashed out of the season-ending WTA Finals in Singapore on Friday despite a hard-fought three-set victory over Agnieszka Radwanska.

Having lost her opening two White Group matches of the round-robin stage to Caroline Wozniacki and Petra Kvitova, Sharapova had to win in straight sets to have any chance of making it through to the semi-finals.

She got off to a fine start, winning the opening set narrowly before storming into a 5-0 lead in the second, only for Radwanska to overhaul the deficit and force a tiebreak, which the Pole eventually won.

To Sharapova's credit, she kept a high intensity in the final set and won the match comfortably in the end, but she she will not be appearing in the last four and has also scuppered her chances of overhauling Serena Williams for the world No. 1 spot.

Kvitova also saw her tournament come to an end as she went down in two sets to Wozniacki, who claimed her third victory of the tournament to top the group.

The lowest-ranked player at the Singapore event gained the momentum as she took the opener 6-2 in a match Kvitova had to win if she was to advance.

Wozniacki and the Wimbledon champion then played out a tight opening seven games in the second set before the Dane took a crucial break to make it 5-3.

Serving for the set, Wozniacki was forced to deuce but eventually prevailed to send Kvitova out of the tournament and in turn take Radwanska through with her to the semi-finals.

In the Red Group's final encounter Ana Ivanovic failed to join Simona Halep in the last four despite a three-set victory over the Romanian.

The world No. 7 needed a straight sets victory over the previously unbeaten Halep and started well, winning a tiebreak to take the first set.

However, Halep was not about to acquiesce to Ivanovic's needs and she tied things up at one set all in the second to end the Serb's hopes of a place in the final four.

Much like Sharapova, Ivanovic did not let her head drop and managed to win the match after taking the crucial break in the eighth game and serving out for the win.

It means that Williams joins Halep in the semi-finals along with the White Group top-two Wozniacki and Radwanska.

Petra Kvitova defeats Maria Sharapova: 6-3, 6-2

Caroline Wozniacki defeats Agnieszka Radwanska: 7-5, 6-3

Serena Williams defeats Eugenie Bouchard: 6-1, 6-1

Maria Sharapova lost her second match of the season-ending 2014 WTA Finals in Singapore on Thursday as she was comprehensively downed in two sets by Wimbledon champion Petra Kvitova.

After losing to Caroline Wozniacki in her opener, the Russian star now has no chance of overhauling Serena Williams as world No. 1 by the end of the term and only a very slim chance of making it to the semi-finals in Singapore.

Sharapova won the first two games against Kvitova on Thursday before the Czech left-hander found her rhythm and won 11 out of the next 12.

Sharapova could do little in response to her opponent's dominance and was, in the end, comprehensively beaten in straight sets. Kvitova's round-robin record now stands at one win and one loss with a game remaining.

Earlier in the day, Wozniacki took one step closer to the last four as she won her second match, also in two sets, against Agnieszka Radwanska—who prevailed over Kvitova on Tuesday.

The Dane—who took over three hours to see off Sharapova two days ago in an epic match—managed to come back from a break down in the opening set to win it in the 12th game.

The world No. 8 then exchanged breaks with Radwanska in the second set before winning the crucial seventh game. She saw out the match from there with ease, though she admitted afterwards that she had found it tough, per Sky Sports:

"

I knew from the start that this wasn't going to be an easy match. I came out there a little bit nervous, but you know, I just did my best out there.

"

Despite having won her first two games, Wozniacki is still not assured of a place in the last four and faces Kvitova in her final match of the round-robin group stage on Friday. Friday also sees Sharapova take on Radwanska while the Red Group will be settled by Ana Ivanovic's clash against the unbeaten Simona Halep.

Serena Williams responded triumphantly against Eugenie Bouchard after suffering the worst defeat of her professional career to Halep, per ESPN. The American improved to a record of 2-1—condemning Bouchard to her third straight defeat—and can remain hopeful of progressing.

The 18-time grand slam winner posted five aces and won 79 percent of her first service points in a simple win, per ATP's official stats.

Bouchard was once again overpowered on the finals stage and surrendered after less than an hour, keeping Williams' hopes alive. A straight sets victory for Ana Ivanovic over Halep is the only way the world No. 1 will miss out, highlighting the importance of her third-match win.

Simona Halep [4] defeats Serena Williams [1]: 6-0, 6-2

Ana Ivanovic [7] defeats Eugenie Bouchard [5]: 6-1, 6-3.

Serena Williams worked hard to overcome Ana Ivanovic during the opening match of her WTA Finals defence, but she was easily dominated by Simona Halep in Wednesday's Red Group battle.

Remarkably, Halep won the opening set in just 20 minutes without conceding a game. The Romanian youngster, who had never beaten her American counterpart before the clash in Singapore, calmly took advantage of a noticeably off-form Williams during the opening exchanges.

As noted by Alex Sharp of the Daily Mail, Williams posted just seven points before Halep claimed the set. Halep played on the front foot throughout and looked to pounce on Williams' wild service games.

Last year's champion barely offered resistance, winning under half of her first service points throughout the match and claiming a measly 29 percent on second serve, per ATP's official match stats. Halep spotted Williams' lack of confidence from the off, winning five of six break points in a victory which took less than an hour.

The 23-year-old's varied selection of shots was mightily impressive. Once Williams failed to land her first serve, it became an almost cruel inevitability that Halep would fire home an unanswerable return during the American's second attempt.

Williams tweeted her thoughts after the match, saying:

"

In summary Simona Halep played great. Good job and Good luck.

— Serena Williams (@serenawilliams) October 22, 2014"

Elsewhere, Ana Ivanovic secured her first win of the finals against Eugenie Bouchard. Both suffered defeat during the opening matches, meaning this was a battle to remain in the competition.

Ivanovic captured the first set with little trouble, winning 88 percent of her first service points, compared to Bouchard's measly sum of 22 percent, per ATP. This set the tone for the entire match, as Ivanovic dominated with a consistent rhythm of shots that continued to send her opponent across court.

Bouchard managed a minor comeback in the second set—taking one break point—but was unable to find her best form. As such, a second loss of the tournament sees the Canadian drop out of the running.

Caroline Wozniacki defeats Maria Sharapova: 7-6(4), 6-7(5), 6-2

Agnieszka Radwanska defeats Petra Kvitova: 6-2, 6-3

Eighth-seeded Caroline Wozniacki beat world No. 2 Maria Sharapova in Singapore at the WTA Tour Finals on Tuesday in a three-hour epic.

It is the Dane's second straight victory over Sharapova, who needs to at least reach the final of the season-ending showpiece to have any chance of claiming the world No. 1 spot from Serena Williams.

Wozniacki took the opening set after a tiebreak, having looked the better player and taken the first break of the match only for Sharapova to hit back.

The second set also went to a deciding tiebreak, which the Russian took 7-5 to tie things up with over two hours already on the clock.

Wozniacki could have lost her focus after a disrupted second set in which she had served for the match and complained to the umpire about distracting light issues and inaccurate line-calling.

However, the former world No. 1 dominated the deciding set, winning four consecutive games from 2-2 to claim victory in three hours and 13 minutes. She admitted to feeling tired post-match, per BBC Sport:

"I'm feeling a little tired. In the third set, I stepped it up and started hitting through the ball a bit more."

In Tuesday's other White Group match, another lower-ranked player in sixth-seeded Agnieszka Radwanska overcame the match favourite in the form of world No. 3 Petra Kvitova.

However, the Polish Radwanska had a much easier time of things in her encounter, winning easily in two sets in under 90 minutes, something of a shock result.

Radwanska preyed well on Kvitova's second serve and claimed only her second victory against the Wimbledon champion with surprising ease to move her to the top of the group rankings.

Wednesday sees the Red Group back in action with Serena Williams and Simona Halep—both opening-day victors—facing off, while Eugenie Bouchard and Ana Ivanovic will go head-to-head in search of a first win.

Serena Williams defeats Ana Ivanovic: 6-4, 6-4

Simona Halep defeats Eugenie Bouchard: 6-2, 6-3

Serena Williams got the defence of her WTA Finals title off to a fine start in Singapore on Monday with a well-fought two-set victory over Serbia's Ana Ivanovic.

Having missed the previous two tournaments through injury and illness, Williams did look a little rusty at the start of the match, having to fend off two break points in her first service game.

However, it did not take the 18-time Grand Slam winner long to find her groove and she claimed an early break to race into a 4-1 lead in the opener.

But Ivanovic broke back for 4-3 and came within a whisker of another for 5-4 before eventually being broken in the 10th game to hand Williams the set.

Traded service breaks to start the second set were followed by a run of holds between the pair before, once again, Williams claimed the crucial 10th game on Ivanovic's serve to win the match in two.

The American was delighted to get a strong start as she aims to win the tournament for the third year running, per ESPN.co.uk:

"

I'm really excited with how I played tonight. To see all my fans over there was really exciting - thank you so much. I've been working hard and am glad to be here. Today I was really fighting all the way. Ana played so well, I was just trying to fight as hard as I could.

"

In Monday's second match, Romanian Simona Halep won the battle of the debutants as she cruised to a relatively easy two-set victory over Eugenie Bouchard.

Halep seemed much the more relaxed of the first-timers in Singapore as Canadian Bouchard struggled to find her rhythm.

While neither player's serve seemed to be particularly firing, it was Halep who dictated the play throughout. She cruised to the opening set before an early break in the second handed her all the initiative to win the match easily.

Tuesday sees Maria Sharapova open up her title challenge against Caroline Wozniacki, while Petra Kvitova will face Agnieszka Radwanska in the White group's first encounters.
