Twitter Reacts to Peyton Manning Breaking Brett Favre's Career Passing TD Record

Chris RolingOct 19, 2014

Denver Broncos quarterback Peyton Manning furthered his legend Sunday night by surpassing Brett Favre to take sole ownership of the record for the most passing touchdowns in a career—and he did so by two, with 510.

Manning finally topped the record with an eight-yard touchdown pass, his 509th, to Demaryius Thomas in the second quarter of the Broncos' 42-17 win over the San Francisco 49ers, his third of the night:

Manning finished with a 22-of-26 mark for 318 yards and four scores.

The historic moment warranted an outpouring of support from far and wide:

One of the most entertaining names in NFL history was the subject of a memorable celebration after the historic score, as he should be:

Of course, it is so like Manning to possibly have chosen to entertain in such a way, per Lindsay Jones of USA Today:

After, Manning shared a moment with coach John Fox, as captured by Chad Brown:

In the greater context of Manning's career, the man who has been named the league's Most Valuable Player five times and owns a bevy of individual awards is fortunate to make it to this point, as a jarring description from journalist Tommy Tomlinson illustrates:

Speaking of a career-long path, SportsCenter and ESPN Stats & Info bring to light some jaw-dropping details encompassing the 38-year-old quarterback's NFL journey:

Ryan Leaf, the No. 2 overall pick behind Manning in the 1998 NFL draft, is forever linked to the legendary signal-caller.

As Bleacher Report's Matt Miller points out, Leaf has some work to do to swing the debate back in his direction:

To keep things on the humorous note, Jenn Sterger offered Manning some advice:

Manning surely has a strong relationship with Favre, whom he stole the record from Sunday night. The legend took to Twitter to congratulate his fellow record-breaking quarterback:

Fans know Manning, though. He will allow himself little time to celebrate the momentous occasion, instead keeping his eye on the ultimate goal.

Mark Kiszla of The Denver Post puts it best:

For Manning, last year's loss to the Seattle Seahawks in the Super Bowl surely weighs heavily on his mind. Sunday, he wasted little time getting right back to business after breaking the record, tossing a fourth touchdown pass early in the third quarter.

At this rate, Manning's soon-to-be iron grip on the record may truly be untouchable. Manning is surely dialed in on another title, with an extension of his legendary record with each touchdown pass merely the icing on the cake should he hoist a second Lombardi Trophy at the end of the season.
