NFL Quarterback Power Rankings, Post Week 7

Ryan RiddleOct 22, 2014

It was a record-setting Week 7 for quarterbacks in the NFL, with Peyton Manning breaking the career record for the most passing touchdowns of all time. This milestone makes it the perfect week for the future Hall of Famer to ascend to the top of this week’s power rankings.

While several veteran QBs played well this week, most of the younger signal-callers seemed to be showing their lack of experience.

For the first time all season, every QB who started the week before returned to start the following week.

It’s time to see which QBs are moving up and who took a major flop after Week 7.

Methodology

1 of 33

These rankings factor in several major attributes for the quarterback position.

Personal observation and opinion play a key role. A general section for film-review grades form a foundation, but the output of these QBs' most recent performances is what really sends them flying up and down the rankings each week.

Wins also give quarterbacks a slight boost in addition to their individual performances. The statistics used to help determine the ranking system are pulled from ESPN.comNFL.com and Pro Football Focus (subscription required), unless stated otherwise.

Stats that are factored in include passer rating, completion percentage, yards per pass, rushing yards per game, touchdown-to-interception ratio, fumbles lost and wins.

As the season moves on, the weighted influence from last year's output will be reduced by 25 percent each week.

When more than one quarterback plays for a team in one game, the QB with the most passing attempts is featured in the slide.

Note: Total QBR is a scoring system that assesses everything a quarterback does on the field. It is explained further on ESPN.com.

Also, Pro Football Focus grades every single play of the season to generate a cumulative point total, which weighs into the metric as well.

32. Geno Smith, New York Jets

Last Thursday night, the Jets and their 30th-ranked offense battled the Patriots' fifth-ranked defense.

Geno Smith got the start and showed he deserved it despite being on a short leash. This was his first game all year in which he avoided an interception.

The Jets take on the Bills and a relentless pass rush this Sunday. Buffalo leads the league in sacks with 24, and Geno leads an offense that’s ranked 26th in yards.

With the addition of Percy Harvin, it should be interesting to see how they use him in his first game as a member of the Jets. It’s now or never for the Jets.

31. Blake Bortles, Jacksonville Jaguars

Bortles completed 17 of 31 passes for 159 yards, with one touchdown and three interceptions. After the game, he had this to say, per The St. Augustine Record (via The Florida Times-Union):

"

The defense and offensive line and running game won this game, no doubt about it. Anybody can see that. Obviously, I’m not happy with the way I played, but I’m extremely happy with the outcome of the game.

He now has an NFL-high 10 interceptions, an average of two a game since he took over for the anemic Chad Henne, who was finally benched.

To illustrate the benefits of being a mobile QB—Chad Henne attempted 78 passes and was sacked 16 times. Blake Bortles attempted 174 passes and was taken down 13 times.

However, Bortles has a long way to go before he can become a true asset for the offense. His 70.2 passer rating is the second-worst in the NFL.

Bridgewater's first of two INTs was a bit of a fluke, though not a well-thrown ball, but the second pick was all him. It was just a poor throw staring down the WR the whole time. However, the rookie came right back and drove down the field for a TD.

Season Average

So far this year, Bridgewater has only thrown a single TD pass compared to five INTs. Despite only playing in four games, he has already been sacked 15 times, which is tied for the eighth-most in the league. This is a combination of poor offensive line play and holding on to the ball too long.

Per PFF, Bridewater is fourth among QBs with the highest percentage (56.6) of dropbacks lasting 2.6 seconds or more.  This indicates he needs to work more on getting the ball out more quickly, especially when the offensive line is not protecting that well.

To further demonstrate his struggles, Teddy’s 67.4 passer rating is the lowest among all qualified quarterbacks.

A struggling defense is just the type of opponent that could change things around for an offense ranked dead last in passing yards per game. Bridgewater should be able to take advantage, but keep in mind, there is talent on that Tampa Bay defense.

Ryan Tannehill led the 25th-ranked passing attack into Chicago for what appeared to be an even matchup against the Bears. The young QB and the Dolphins needed a win to get back to .500, and that's exactly what they got.

Tannehill had his best game of the season, completing 78.1 percent of his passes to go with two TD passes and no turnovers.

Tannehill has struggled to push the ball downfield his entire career due to subpar accuracy on his deep throws. As a result, the offense is forced to settle for short-to-intermediate routes more than they would like—despite having a known deep threat in receiver Mike Wallace.

Miami’s young QB is averaging 6.53 yards per pass on the season, a number that only two current starters have failed to surpass.

This defense has also allowed more first downs (103) than any other team in the league.  Maybe this is the game Tannehill can find his rhythm and timing with the deep ball.

Aaron Rodgers made the most of a nice opportunity against one of the worst third-down defenses in the game. The Panthers had the second-worst success rate on third down, allowing teams to convert 50 percent of the time.

So, perhaps it was no surprise when Rodgers completed 86.4 percent of his passes to go with three TDs.  They won the game decisively.

Aaron Rodgers is currently in the zone right now as he inches closer and closer to the No. 1 spot with each passing week. He is currently averaging 7.93 yards per pass (sixth) and has the highest TD/INT ratio (+17) in the NFL.

Incredibly, Rodgers has only thrown a single interception out of 211 pass attempts.  By contrast, Blake Bortles has thrown a pick every 17.4 pass attempts.

He is second behind only Peyton Manning with a 117.3 passer rating.

Next Week Outlook

The Sunday-night game will feature two of the best QBs in the business when Aaron Rodgers heads to New Orleans to take on Drew Brees and the Saints.

The Saints have struggled on defense so far, and Aaron Rodgers has been on fire since telling fans to “relax.”

QB Peyton Manning had an historic night in Denver last week. He threw his third touchdown of the first half of Week 7 against the San Francisco 49ers to WR Demaryius Thomas in the second quarter. It was the 509th touchdown pass of Manning's career as he moved into the top spot in NFL history for career touchdown passes.

He would go on to throw four TDs and pass 300 yards through the air for the third time in six games.

Season Average

1.2

Manning and his Broncos lead the league in points per game (31.5) and passer rating (118.2). His 68.7 percent completion rate and 8.52 yards per pass attempt are both second-best in the league.

The future Hall of Famer who has thrown for more touchdown passes than any other QB for his career, and for a single season, is currently tied for first place in TDs (19) with the man who would replace him in Indianapolis.

Considering how often Manning’s arm strength is knocked, he still managed to rank fourth in the NFL in deep-ball yards—which, according to PFF, is derived from the passing attempts targeted 20 yards or more downfield.

Next Week Outlook

The Chargers pass defense is one of the better units in the league. However, Peyton Manning is a huge challenge for any defense. The Bolts are ranked third in fewest passing yards allowed (209.6).
