Dennis Rodman Dubs J.R. Smith the 'New Dennis Rodman'

Kyle NewportOct 15, 2014

The Dennis Rodman-J.R. Smith comparisons keep on coming.

In an interview with the New York Post's Steve Serby last month, New York Knicks President Phil Jackson said Smith is like Rodman in that he has "an outlier kind of side to him."

That's a comparison the Knicks guard didn't mind at all.

"Last time I checked Dennis Rodman’s got what three, four rings?" Smith said, per Peter Botte of the New York Daily News. "I'm not offended by that. It’s an honor. He’s a Hall of Famer. And to be put in the same words as a Hall of Famer is something special. So I’m not offended at all."

Just for clarification, Rodman won five rings in his career—two with the Detroit Pistons and three with the Chicago Bulls.

Rodman's former coach and Smith both talked about the comparison, so Rodman decided to weigh in on the matter Wednesday:

Rodman is on board with the comparison.

It is an interesting—and good—comparison. There's nothing wrong with being an "outlier," because most teams need someone who can mix things up a bit. If Smith can complement Carmelo Anthony in the triangle offense in a way that's similar to how Rodman fit in with the Bulls, the Knicks will be back in playoff contention this season.
