Giants vs. Eagles: Score and Twitter Reaction from Sunday Night Football

Nate LoopOct 12, 2014

The Philadelphia Eagles ended the New York Giants' three-game winning streak in utterly convincing fashion, rolling to a 27-0 shutout victory in a Sunday Night Football contest that had very little in the way of drama.

The final score wasn't the only grave takeaway from this game for New York. The team will be without star wide receiver Victor Cruz for quite some time, as the fourth-year pro left the game with a torn patellar tendon, according to the team's official Twitter account:

A shutout win, especially over a rival team, is always something to savor, and it's been quite some time since the Eagles enjoyed the feeling. Bucks County Courier Times' Ed Kracz pointed out just how long, as well as the last opponent:

Here is a quarter-by-quarter look at the score:

Tom Coughlin's primary physician will be glad the elderly coach didn't suffer a coronary after watching his charges put on a miserable performance at Lincoln Financial Field. He was reluctant to cast blame elsewhere for the loss, opting to encourage the finger pointing to start and end with him.

"It starts right here at the top," Coughlin said after the game, via Jordan Ranaan of The Star Ledger. "Very, very poor performance. I take full responsibility for it. And there's not a lot to say about it. Not a lot to say."

The Eagles offensive line finally put in a cohesive performance, allowing just one sack on quarterback Nick Foles and opening up plenty of running lanes for LeSean McCoy.

They must have pulled some sort of Space Jam scenario and sapped the talent from the Giants' heavies, who did very little to protect quarterback Eli Manning on the night. NFL Network's Albert Breer noted that the Eagles were able to get to Manning early and often in this contest:

Of course, Manning didn't help his own cause and struggled to complete even the simplest of passes, as ESPN Stats and Info points out:

The Eagles scored 10 points in each of the first two quarters, with Foles tossing touchdown passes to tight ends Zach Ertz and James Casey in the first and second quarters, respectively.

McCoy, who finished with 149 yards rushing in what was easily his most consistent performance of the season, looked sprightly and eluded plenty of tackles when he got to the second level of the Giants defense (which was quite often). SportsCenter provided a look at one of his main fine efforts from the contest:

Foles made only one truly boneheaded gaffe, and it came just before halftime. Foles dropped back and looked off running back Darren Sproles on a swing route, only to come right back to the pint-sized speedster and somehow miss an eagerly waiting Antrel Rolle standing right in front of him.

Foles lofted the ball into the safety's hands, ruining a good opportunity for the Eagles to score a killer blow before the break with the score already 20-0.

As it turned out, the play didn't matter much since the Eagles went right back to dominating the Giants in the second half. Linebacker Connor Barwin was in Manning's grill throughout the night and finished the game with five tackles, three sacks and two quarterback hits, per ESPN.com.

Barwin verbalized the blueprint to beating the Giants, via CBS Sports' Josh Katzowitz:

Cruz suffered his injury in the third quarter on the Giants' best scoring opportunity of the night. They went for a touchdown on fourth-and-goal, and Cruz leapt awkwardly to try and corral Manning's pass, but fell to the ground in pain and was eventually carted off the field.

Sproles finally put the game out of reach with just over five minutes remaining in the third, scoring from 15 yards out to create the final 27-0 scoreline. Unfortunately, the Eagles didn't leave the game unscathed either. According to Geoff Mosher of CSNPhilly.com, Sproles sprained his MCL during the contest and could be sidelined for multiple weeks.

Perhaps the best news of the night for the Giants wasn't anywhere near the box score. Eric Galko of the Sporting News noted that rookie wideout Odell Beckham Jr. was getting plenty of separation throughout the evening:

He finished with just two catches for 28 yards on four targets but should take on an increased role in the offense with Cruz out.

The fourth quarter was relatively uneventful, with the Eagles on cruise control and doing their best to close. Mercifully, the final whistle sounded and the Eagles officially improved their record to 5-1, while the Giants fall to 3-3.

The Eagles and Dallas Cowboys are clearly the class of the NFC East this season. Both teams have just one loss on the season and could very well make the playoffs in a wide-open conference race. The Giants, on the other hand, are perhaps the most inscrutable team in the league.

Yes, they are playing .500 ball, but Manning has hardly been reliable and will be hard-pressed to come up with some instant offense with both Rashad Jennings and Cruz out. There is still hope for this team, as the pendulum can swing back in the opposite direction and the team will find its form again.

However, with four tough games against the Cowboys, Indianapolis Colts, Seattle Seahawks and San Francisco 49ers on the slate in the coming weeks, don't count on the boys in blue emerging from this stretch with a winning record.
