Smith has not lived up to the hype to say the least after being selected in the 2013 NFL draft as a second-round pick. Being on the road, traveling across the country and facing a stout San Diego defense doesn't help, especially with a limited amount of playmakers flanking him.
Jets offensive coordinator Marty Mornhinweg coached Vick with the Philadelphia Eagles, so there is some familiarity between the two.
Perhaps they can execute New York's West Coast offense better than Smith and provide Jets coach Rex Ryan with competent QB play—something he hasn't consistently had in his entire tenure.
