Premier League Table: Updated 2014 EPL Standings Following Matchday 6 Results

Andrew GouldSep 27, 2014

The Premier League sustained its frenetic energy through another exhilarating slate of Matchday 6 fixtures.

Heading into September's final set of matches, Liverpool looked to redeem a lackluster start against rivals Everton during another Merseyside derby installment. Chelsea entered the weekend fighting to avoid their first loss of the young season against a hungry Aston Villa squad given the chance to make a major statement on Saturday.

Meanwhile, after giving up five goals to Leicester City last week, Manchester United needed a strong bounce-back effort to avoid a precipitous decline down the table.

Matchday 6 Results

Liverpool 1-1 Everton

Liverpool will exit September without a victory after Phil Jagielka's late, deep strike forced the Reds to settle for a draw.

Heading into extra time, Liverpool held a 1-0 advantage on the strength of a Steven Gerrard goal. With Liverpool minutes away from beating their foes, Jagielka darted a shot across the field to salvage a point for Everton, who still cannot obtain an elusive triumph over their foes.

ESPN Stats & Info provided the extent to Everton's win drought, as well as video of the last-minute equalizer:

WhoScored.com added fuel to Liverpool's disappointment by noting the opposing captain's wide-ranging stretch without a goal before Saturday:

Despite the crushing ending, manager Brendan Rodgers expressed pride in his team's performance to LiverpoolFC.com's Phil Reade:

"

We didn't get what we deserved. It was very clear that we were much the better side today. When you concede a goal like that so late on, it epitomises the luck that went against us today. But I'm certainly very proud of the players. I thought the intensity was getting back up to near where we have been for 19 months. Tactically, I thought we were very good in the game. We defended very well.

"

Nevertheless, Liverpool find themselves at the bottom half of the EPL table with seven points through six matches. Part of the blame goes to a rough schedule, which clears up over October. None of their next four opponents poses a positive goal differential, so they should enter Nov. 8's fixture against Chelsea in much better shape.

Chelsea 3-0 Aston Villa

LONDON, ENGLAND - SEPTEMBER 27: Diego Costa of Chelsea scores his team's third goal past goalkeeper Brad Guzan of Aston Villa during the Barclays Premier League match between Chelsea and Aston Villa at Stamford Bridge on September 27, 2014 in London, Eng

Chelsea remain in first place as the only club yet to lose after roasting Aston Villa in a 3-0 shutout.

The Blues dominated the match from start to finish, controlling possession for 63 percent of the bout while allowing one lone shot on goal. Veteran defender John Terry commended his team's performance, per the Premier League's Twitter page:

Oscar began the proceedings with an early goal at the seventh minute. Per WhoScored.com, that's a typical occurrence when these two meet at Stamford Bridge:

Diego Costa continued his torrid Premier League start with his eighth goal of the season. The entire Aston Villa team has just four goals this year.

With Costa leading the charge, Chelsea's 19 scores lead the league by a wide margin. Everton and Manchester City are tied for second with 12 apiece. That high-powered offense places them first in goal differential (12) and points (16).

Aston Villa fall to fifth place, a fluky standing given their minus-three goal differential. Since defeating Hull City and Liverpool, they've impeded their hot start with a pair of 3-0 defeats.

Manchester United 2-1 West Ham

Despite an ill-advised red card from Wayne Rooney, Manchester United preserved their 2-1 lead against West Ham with 10 men.

Five minutes in to the match, Rooney delivered the first punch of the afternoon. Yet an unnecessary kick on Stewart Downing compelled the officials to hand him a red card with 30 minutes remaining. Bleacher Report UK showed the blatant infraction:

West Ham could not capitalize on the one-man advantage, failing to deliver a second-half equalizer despite the star's absence. They stand pat on seven points, while United vault into seventh place with eight.

Robin van Persie, who contributed his squad's second goal of the slate, praised his side's resiliency to the team's official Twitter page:

Following an embarrassing lost last weekend, the Red Devils couldn't afford another setback on Saturday. They're right back in striking distance to earn a top-four finish after hanging on to earn a gutsy three points.

West Brom 4-0 Burnley FC

WEST BROMWICH, ENGLAND - SEPTEMBER 28: WBA goalscorer Graham Dorrans (l) celebrates his goal with Saido Berahino during the Barclays Premier League match between West Bromwich Albion and Burnley at The Hawthorns on September 28, 2014 in West Bromwich, E

West Brom moved up to 10th on the table with a win over Burnley, ahead of notable teams like Liverpool and Everton. That much has been one of the early surprises of this Premier League season.

The year is still young, but Saido Berahino is already making his case as one of the best players in the league right now. His two goals against Burnley give him five on the season.

Craig Dawson and Graham Dorrans also netted goals of their own, with Dorrans' coming in the 90th minute.

While West Brom scored four goals, it was the third goal that was truly the one that did Burnley in. That third goal put Burnley at the very bottom of the table. With no offensive attack to rely on, Burnley will continue to be overmatched as the season continues on.
