EPL Results Week 6: Premier League Scores, Top Scorers and 2014 Table Tracker

Adam WellsSep 27, 2014

Week 6 of the English Premier League has a lot to live up to following last week's thrilling slate, which included a battle between Manchester City and Chelsea that ended in a tie. Fortunately, there is another huge showdown on the schedule and plenty of room for movement with clubs looking to move away from the pack.

It's also notable for being a derby weekend, with the north London derby and Merseyside derby reigniting the often-heated rivalries that make the EPL such a treat to watch from afar and make you glad that you aren't there to get in the scrum.

There's no better way to start derby day than in Anfield with the Merseyside derby between Liverpool and Everton. Fortunately, the opening match of the English Premier League's sixth day didn't disappoint.

The Blues were able to come away with a point thanks to a beautiful goal on a half-volley in extra time from Phil Jagielka, via Bleacher Report UK:

In addition to saving Everton from its third loss in six matches, Jagielka's goal couldn't have come at a better time for him. The veteran defender hadn't found the net in 29 months for the Blues, per Paul Carr of ESPN Stats & Info:

After the match, Jagielka was happy to get a point but told BT Sport that the whole team has to start playing better to end this early-season funk, via Simon Sinclair of Sports Mole:

"

Hopefully next time we come to Anfield we can go one better but the point is not the end of the world. It has been a frustrating season so far, to go 1-0 down and keep knocking at the door showed tremendous character. We need to keep showing character.

The lads need to keep playing the same way, keep having the courage to do the right things and hopefully this will be a kick-start to the season for us.

"

Jagielka wasn't the only one to have a big performance in the match. Steven Gerrard got the scoring started with a goal in the 65th minute for Liverpool, which looked for a long time like it was going to hold up as the difference.

Seeing Gerrard find the net against Everton wasn't a surprising development. According to The Sun's official football Twitter account, the striker's goal was his fifth in the last six games against the Blues:

However, Raheem Sterling was the best all-around player for Liverpool on this day, at least according to WhoScored.com's ratings:

In the second round of matches on Saturday, the big stories were Manchester United starting 18-year-old Paddy McNair and the debut of Luke Shaw.

McNair and Shaw ended up playing second fiddle to Wayne Rooney, who got the Red Devils on the board in the fifth minute and moved into sole possession of third place on the EPL goal-scoring list, via ESPN.com's Paul Carr:

Robin van Persie would also get in on the scoring, putting Man Utd up 2-0 with a goal in the 22nd minute. It wouldn't be all good news for United, as Rooney was ejected following a red card for this play, via B/R UK:

On the positive side, Rooney's absence the rest of the match didn't prevent United from holding on for a much-needed 2-1 victory. The win at least keeps the Red Devils within shouting distance of Chelsea in the standings.

There's still work to be done for Louis van Gaal's club in the coming weeks, but at least it's a step in the right direction after last week's 5-3 loss against Leicester City.
