Teams to Watch Out For

Southampton

Ronald Koeman's first season in charge at St. Mary's took to new heights this week when his Southampton side got the better of Arsenal, in North London of all places, to take their place in the fourth round of the League Cup.

The triumph further validates the notion that while losing some of his bigger Saints stars, Koeman has rebuilt the Southampton squad into a machine perhaps even greater than the one that emerged in recent seasons.

Mirror journalist John Cross emphasised as much in his post-match comments, hinting that Koeman's pedigree is building at the helm of the Premier League club:

His squad will become tested more and more as the season progresses, but for now the south-coast club are riding high in all competitions and are a potential dark horse for silverware.

Swansea City

Roberto Martinez had an unpleasant trip back to the Liberty Stadium in Round 3 of the Capital One Cup, where on Wednesday his Everton line-up was humiliated by a 3-0 scoreline running in favour of the hosts.

Garry Monk is going from strength to strength in his tenure as Swansea City boss, and the club's progress past respectable opposition only further cements their status as a power to be wary of.

OptaJoe tells us it was a landmark victory for the Welsh outfit, and Monk's men can hope to uncover new ground as they look to maintain a powerful front across numerous campaigns:

Wilfried Bony will return from suspension in time for the third round, giving the club a boost in attack for the next stage of competition, where the Swans will look to move past Liverpool.

Liverpool

It took Liverpool a 29-penalty shootout to make their way past Middlesbrough on Tuesday evening, but Brendan Rodgers will count the result first, and the manner it which it came about second.

The Reds have come across a foggy patch of form recently, whether it be down to injuries having their impact or the squad still piecing together all its new parts—most probably a combination of the two.

Regaining their best form will be the next mission on Liverpool's agenda, though, and there's no denying that when this side is at its best, they pose a great potential, summarised best in wins over Southampton and Tottenham in recent weeks.

Will that potential come to the fore in the fourth round? Only time will tell.
