Gianni VerschuerenSep 21, 2014

Jose Mourinho told the press Frank Lampard "did his job" in Chelsea's 1-1 draw against Manchester City at the Etihad Stadium on Sunday, as the longtime Chelsea star came off the bench for the hosts and proceeded to score the equaliser.

As shared by BBC Sport, Mourinho took the pragmatic approach, saying the "love story is over":

The Blues had taken the lead through Andre Schurrle in the second half, taking advantage of a red card for Pablo Zabaleta. The league leaders looked to be on their way to yet another win, but Lampard's late strike brought an end to the club's perfect start to the Premier League season.

The midfielder was far more emotional than his former coach, per Bleacher Report UK:

Chances were scarce on Sunday, and a draw appeared to be a fair result. Mourinho felt the same way, via BBC Radio Manchester:

Giving up a lead with a man advantage is never a good thing, but per ESPN FC, the Special One didn't feel anyone was at fault for the equaliser:

The atmosphere surrounding the clash between the two title favourites likely led to the closed nature of the match, and he told Sky Sports he always felt it was going to be that kind of fixture:

When asked about the fans' warm reaction to Lampard, even after he scored the goal, Mourinho said the supporters never forget what the player did for the club, per Squawka:

As shared by the club's Twitter feed, he considered the point a "point won," because it extended their lead at the top of the standings:

Manuel Pellegrini took some criticism on social media for his decision to play Lampard against his old club, but via the Premier League's Twitter feed, the manager said he wanted to be involved:

Via Sky Sports, he claimed the veteran midfielder would still be a pivotal member for any team:

As shared by ESPN FC's Miguel Delaney, he wasn't satisfied with the result and didn't appreciate Chelsea's defensive tactics:

He then took it one step further, referring to Chelsea as a "small team":

He compared the Blues to Stoke City, via Manchester Evening News' Stuart Brennan:

The result ensures Chelsea remain top of the standings in the Premier League, while City have now gone winless in their last four, including a midweek Champions League 1-0 loss to Bayern Munich.

The Blues will host Aston Villa in Week 6, while the Citizens will look to rebound against Hull City.
