Twitter Reacts to Frank Lampard's Performance from Manchester City vs. Chelsea

Rob GoldbergSep 21, 2014

Manchester City and Chelsea played to a 1-1 draw Sunday, but the big story was Frank Lampard scoring the equalising goal against his former team.

After more than a decade with Chelsea, the 36-year-old midfielder transferred to English Premier League rival Manchester City. In a crazy twist, the veteran ended up making a huge impact in a key early-season battle for both teams.

Lampard was subbed into the match in the 78th minute with Manchester City trailing 1-0. Phil McNulty of BBC Sport noted how the fans reacted to the move:

According to the Chelsea Twitter account, his former supporters were happy to see the legend on the pitch:

Adrian Healey of ESPN joked about Lampard forgetting who he played for:

However, he did not have a problem making the biggest play of the match, scoring the tying goal in the 85th minute, as described by ESPN FC:

Henry Winter of the Daily Telegraph provided a look at the irony of the situation:

Grant Wahl of Sports Illustrated gave his thoughts on the score:

ESPN's Kyle Bonagura noted Lampard did not celebrate, even in the big moment:

Analyst Ives Galarcep took it a step further to describe the reaction:

Simon Davies of BBC Radio provided his thoughts on the lack of celebration:

Still, this did not prevent the impact Lampard provided in the match. Paul Carr of ESPN FC discusses how well he has fared in this matchup to this point:

Lampard is clearly not the player he once was, but he still has the ability to impact even the biggest matches in the EPL. Unfortunately for Chelsea, he is now doing it against them.

This performance should also help him get more playing time with Manchester City in the near future.
