Virginia vs. BYU: Score and Twitter Reaction
BYU continued its strong start to the season with a 41-33 victory over Virginia, improving to 4-0 on the year.
The Cougars allowed 519 yards from scrimmage and overcame 133 penalty yards to get the win, thanks mostly to another big game from quarterback Taysom Hill. The junior finished with 187 passing yards with two touchdowns to go with 72 yards and a touchdown on the ground.
Paul Myerberg of USA Today breaks down BYU's path going forward:
Greyson Lambert had a solid showing for Virginia with 188 passing yards before being knocked out of the game in the third quarter after taking a big hit. Matt Johns took over and went 14-of-23 for 139 yards and a touchdown, but he did not do enough to complete the comeback.
The first half featured a number of solid drives for each side, but it was a highlight for the kickers as Ian Frye and Trevor Samson combined for five field goals in the first 30 minutes.
Hill was able to complete a touchdown pass to Jordan Leslie, although Virginia still led 16-13 at the half thanks to some great defense, as noted by Sports Illustrated:
However, BYU was able to regain the lead in the third quarter on a strong run into the end zone by Hill:
Chip Patterson of CBS Sports was impressed by the score:
Mitch Harper of 1320 The Fan then noted it was running back Jamaal Williams' turn to shine as he led a scoring drive to put the Cougars up 27-16:
After Lambert was forced out of the game with an ankle injury, BYU was able to get the ball back and extend the league to 34-19 on a 50-yard touchdown pass to Mitchell Juergens. Jacquie Franciulli of Fox Sports provided her thoughts on the score:
Backup Matt Johns led Virginia back to a one-score deficit in the fourth quarter, but an Adam Hine 99-yard kickoff return for a touchdown gave BYU a 41-26 lead.
The Cavaliers had some hope in the closing minutes when a Kyle Dockins receiving touchdown cut the lead to eight, but BYU recovered the ensuing onside kick to secure the victory.
These teams battled in last season's opener with Virginia coming away with a 19-16 win in the rain.
Hill explained before the game that he was ready for his second chance, via Anne M. Peterson of the Associated Press:
"I'm very excited about that football game. I don't know if you want to say revenge or whatever, but I'm very excited to play Virginia again. I've watched them on tape and some of their games on TV, and they're a good defense, a good football team. So they will be a good challenge for us.
"
The quarterback was able to get his revenge with the win, and he proved the Cougars are even better than many have given them credit for to this point.
Neither side was expected to do much coming into the year, but each has turned heads in the first few games. Bleacher Report's Kyle Kensing broke down Virginia's path to this point:
Even with the loss, the Cavaliers are a candidate to sneak into the AP Top 25 at some point this year.
Meanwhile, BYU earned its ranking after a dominant win over Texas in Week 2. This latest victory once again legitimizes its spot in the polls as the team will likely move up next week.
The team will face Utah State on Oct. 3 after a week off. With seemingly the tougher games on the schedule behind them, the Cougars should end up with a good record by the end of the season.
Virginia continues its nonconference slate next week with a winnable home game against Kent State. With only one ranked opponent remaining on the schedule (albeit No. 1 Florida State), this team could be headed for a big year in the ACC.
