Champions League Tables 2014: Updated Group Standings, Results After Matchday 1

Rory MarsdenSep 17, 2014

European football returned with full force on Tuesday and Wednesday as the Champions League group stages kicked off.

There were several fine encounters on Matchday 1, including three games pitting Bundesliga sides against Premier League opposition.

The German teams most definitely took the spoils as Borussia Dortmund and Bayern Munich beat Arsenal and Manchester City respectively, while Schalke claimed an away draw at Chelsea.

English Sides Underwhelm

It was not a great start for the Premier League sides in the competition as three were all undone by German opposition.

Dortmund overwhelmed the visiting Gunners as Ciro Immobile and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang grabbed the goals to hand Jurgen Klopp's side a convincing 2-0 victory.

Bild (via The Independent's Sam Wallace) did a pretty good job of summing things up as the hosts put on a fine display against an underwhelming Arsenal, with Mesut Ozil alarmingly poor:

Bayern Munich left it late to win 1-0 against City on Wednesday, but Jerome Boateng's deflected shot late-on made its way past Joe Hart and condemned the Sky Blues to a losing start.

With Roma also in Group E—and winning 5-1 against CSKA Moscow—Manuel Pellegrini's side could really have done with a point from their opener and are now on the back foot from the start in terms of qualification.

While Arsenal and City had tough away encounters, Jose Mourinho's Chelsea were expected to see off the challenge of Schalke relatively easily after the Blues' fine start to the domestic season.

However, it did not prove the case and the Stamford Bridge outfit had to settle for a 1-1 home draw. After, talkSPORT's Jason Cundy reckoned Chelsea were guilty of underestimating their opposition:

If the opening matches are a sign of things to come then it is likely that the Premier League sides will—once again—not be going deep into the competition.

While Liverpool claimed a 2-1 win over Ludogorets, it was unconvincing, and the English dominance of the Champions League from the late 2000s does not look like returning any time soon.

Record-Breaking Victories

Both Roma and Porto set club records in the Champions League on Wednesday as they turned on the style to put away a bunch of goals.

The Serie A side bulldozed CSKA Moscow 5-1 while Porto put six unreturned goals past BATE Borisov, Opta reporting both sides' record-breaking feats:

As Italian football writer James Horncastle notes, it has been over half a century since the Giallorossi were so convincing on the European stage:

After one match, Roma sit atop Group E and must fancy themselves to overcome City for what is likely to be a race for second place behind Bayern.

Meanwhile, Porto could be in for a tight race for qualification with Sporting and Athletic Bilbao, but could not have started more convincingly in the tournament.
