Chelsea vs Swansea City: Score, Grades and Reaction from Premier League Game

Alex LivieSep 13, 2014

Chelsea made it four wins out of four in the Premier League after coming from behind to beat Swansea 4-2 at Stamford Bridge on Saturday.

The Swans took a shock lead through a John Terry own goal and, for spells of the match, looked like holding on.

But Diego Costa drew Chelsea level shortly before the interval and added two more goals after the break, with a fourth coming from Loic Remy, to ensure Chelsea are now the only side in the Premier League with a 100 percent record.

Chelsea served notice of their attacking threat in the opening couple of minutes. A fizzing, 40-yard cross-field pass from Eden Hazard picked out the marauding Branislav Ivanovic on the right-hand side. His cross was low and hard and needed intervention from Ashley Williams to deny Andre Schurrle a tap in.

Swansea came into the game with the same perfect record as Chelsea, and they were not overawed by visiting Stamford Bridge.

A volley from Wayne Routledge flew inches wide, but on 11 minutes, they took the lead.

A low cross into the six-yard box caused panic in the Chelsea defence and Terry could only stab the ball into his own net.

Swansea did not retreat into their shell. It was anything but, as Bafetimbi Gomis and Routledge both went close to beating Thibaut Courtois from long range.

Chelsea’s response to going behind was somewhat disappointing, with their play littered with misplaced passes and heavy touches.

Lukasz Fabianski was forced into a save on 36 minutes, with the Swansea keeper plunging to his left to keep out a shot from Oscar.

Chelsea were far from fluent in the first half, but this season they have a proven goalscorer in their ranks and Costa drew them level shortly before half-time.

A corner from Cesc Fabregas found Costa unmarked six yards out and his header flew past Fabianski.

Chelsea have deserved that equaliser having turned the tide of the game. Diego Costa has been as irritating as ever, but scores once again.

Chelsea came out with real intent at the start of the second half and penned Swansea deep in their own half.

Costa had a shot on goal deflected over by his own team-mate Ivanovic, but he was not denied for long, as he gave Chelsea the lead on 56 minutes.

Once again it was Fabregas with the assist, but the reverse pass from Hazard that set the Spaniard free was a joy to see.

Hazard’s flick set Fabregas clear in the box. He could have taken the shot himself, but flicked the ball back to Costa for the easiest of finishes.

Swansea had a huge chance to get back on level terms on 65 minutes when Gomis broke clear. He was in beyond the Chelsea defence, but got his dinked finish all wrong and the effort dribbled wide of the post.

It was a chance Swansea were made to rue, as Costa got his hat-trick on 67 minutes. It was a poacher’s finish, as he reacted quickest to get on the end of a scuffed shot from Ramires and tucked the ball home.

Costa was withdrawn to a standing ovation on 72 minutes, and his replacement Remy marked his Blues debut with a goal of his own to cap a brilliant day for Jose Mourinho's squad.

Jonjo Shelvey produced a neat finish with three minutes left on the clock, but it proved nothing more than a consolation—and a mild irritation for the Blues—for the Swans.

With Arsenal and Manchester City taking points off each other earlier in the day, Chelsea can turn their attentions to a Champions League clash with Schalke on Wednesday knowing they have a cushion at the top of the table.

Mourinho talked down his side's title chances last term, but with a proven goalscorer in his ranks he could well be doing the opposite this season.

Grades

Cesc Fabregas: A

The Spanish midfielder continues to ooze class. Always assured on the ball, Fabregas added two more assists to his name.

Diego Costa: A

The Spain international came into the game as an injury doubt, but he was passed fit to play and he helped himself to a brilliant hat-trick. He never gives defenders a moment’s peace, and although his style may not be to everyone’s taste, he is a manager’s dream.

Branislav Ivanovic: B+

There are not many better attacking right-backs around and he was a constant threat against Swansea. From the first minute he was galloping forward down the right, collecting possession and delivering crosses into the box.
