Marlins P Anthony DeSclafani Suspended, Mike Fiers Fined After Hitting Batters

Chris RolingSep 12, 2014

Miami Marlins pitcher Anthony DeSclafani has been hit with a three-game suspension and Milwaukee Brewers hurler Mike Fiers has received a fine stemming from a contest Thursday between the two sides that saw multiple batters hit by pitches from the mound.

Fiers hit Miami's Giancarlo Stanton and Reed Johnson in the sixth inning, while DeSclafani followed suit shortly after by seemingly intentionally drilling Carlos Gomez. According to MLB Public Relations, the league has acted swiftly in its punishment for both players:

Fiers struck Stanton in the face, causing facial lacerations that required stitches after he left the field on a stretcher. Johnson then entered as a pinch hitter to finish off the at-bat, only to be hit in the hand on Fiers' very next pitch.

After the eventual Milwaukee 4-2 victory, Fiers took to social media to offer his condolences for his actions:

DeSclafani, who made his debut with the Marlins back in May and entered Thursday with a 7.14 ERA and a 1-2 record on 22 strikeouts after being called back up at the start of the month, offered the alleged retaliation and was booted immediately.

Marlins manager Mike Redmond summed up his team's feelings in the dugout during the heat of the moment, as captured by ESPN.com:

"

He hit a guy in the mouth, No.1. After he hit Reed in the hand, he looks in our dugout, throws his hands up in the air like 'Hey, why are you guys mad?' You just knocked out our best player, hit him in the mouth, and then you just hit another guy in the hand. What are we supposed to do? What type of reaction do you think we're trying to give you?

"

Fiers went on to tell reporters that none of his actions were intentional and that "it was heat-of-the-moment stuff," although he understands the players and staffs' desire to defend each other.

Tempers simmered after the game, and CBS Sports' Jon Heyman offered some critical perspective on the events as a whole:

Milwaukee could ill-afford to lose Fiers at this stage of the season, as the team sits at 76-71 and in third place in the NL Central. His fine seems to be the result of him triggering the chain of events and does not suggest the league believes there was intent.

The impact of Thursday's events most hurt the Marlins, a team stuck in the same spot in the NL East at three games under .500. Stanton's absence creates a major hole in the lineup, as he leads the MLB with 105 RBI and leads the National League with 37 home runs.

In the meantime, DeSclafani will be available out of the bullpen for Miami as he awaits the appeal of his suspension, per Manny Navarro of the Miami Herald.

The four-game series between the two sides concluded Thursday.
