Samir Nasri Quits French National Team: Latest Details, Comments and Reaction

Gianni VerschuerenAug 10, 2014

Former French international and current Manchester City star Samir Nasri revealed on Saturday that he has decided to quit international football, saying that the entire ordeal makes him "unhappy."

The controversial midfielder wasn't a part of France's 2014 World Cup squad, and his announcement doesn't come as a huge surprise. As reported by The Guardian's Andy Hunter, Nasri said manager Didier Deschamps is only part of the problem:

"

Let’s face it, as long as he is going to be the manager I don’t think I have a shot after everything that has happened.

I will only be 29 in 2016 for the European Championships but the French national team doesn’t make me happy. Every time I go there, there is just more trouble. I face accusations about me and my family suffers from it and I don’t want to make them suffer, so it’s better to stop it and focus on my club career.

[...]It’s not just him,” he added. “He did what he thought was best for his team. I understand his choice, it is not something about him, I don’t have any problem with him. It’s just everything. [...]I don’t want to be there. I am not happy. I don’t want to go there any more.

According to Hunter, Deschamps reportedly filed a lawsuit against Nasri's outspoken girlfriend Anara Atanes in the wake of her reaction on his omission from the World Cup squad. Atanes took to Twitter and launched a verbal tirade against Deschamps, which only added to the already difficult situation.

Nasri also revealed that he was already considering retirement after Euro 2012, where he received a three-match ban after a verbal altercation with a journalist.

Bleacher Report's Jonathan Johnson wasn't surprised by the news, to say the least:

Goal's Robin Bairner took things one step further:

According to Arsenal News, Deschamps took a not-so-subtle shot at the midfielder when he was asked about his retirement:

And if Purely Football are to be believed, he took things one step further:

Nasri has always had problems with maintaining professional relationships, becoming one of the most hated players in Arsenal history when he made the move to Manchester City.

Yet for all of the controversy, he remains one of the most gifted footballers in the English Premier League, and he played a big part in the Citizens' title campaign in 2013-14.

The Frenchman's decision to focus on his club career is more than just understandable, and one that will benefit all parties involved. While fans of international football will feel sorry they won't get to witness Nasri in the shirt of Les Bleus ever again, his retirement had seemed like a foregone conclusion for a long time.
