Power Ranking the Top 20 European Clubs as Manchester City Win Premier League

Karl MatchettMay 13, 2014

Welcome back to our penultimate power rankings of the European domestic season, as we continue to judge which teams are showing great recent form in their respective leagues.

With just one match left to play in Italy, Spain, France, Turkey and Russia, and the German, Dutch, Portuguese and English top flights already complete, we can get a great look at who has finished the season very much in form—and who let their final placing slip late on.

Manchester City won the Premier League this weekend so will naturally rise, while in Spain it looks as though nobody wants to win it at all.

Here's the top 20.

Dropping out and Honourable Mentions

1 of 21

Sporting Lisbon drop out of our top 20 after their season ended a week ago.

German Bundesliga club Wolfsburg had a strong end to the season but just miss out on a Champions League place.

None of the top six in Spain won, but Celta Vigo recorded a fourth straight win to move into eighth place late on this season.

St. Etienne guaranteed a fourth-place finish in France with a weekend win over Nantes.

20. Lille

2 of 21

Last week: 19

Differential: -1

Lille still need another two points to guarantee themselves a top-three finish, and thus Champions League football, but have only picked up one win from their last four league games.

A 3-1 defeat at home to PSG was no particular surprise, especially once Marvin Martin was sent off with the scores still tied at 0-0.

A late Jonathan Delaplace goal was mere consolation.

19. Bayer Leverkusen

3 of 21

Last week: NEW!

Differential: NEW!

Bayer Leverkusen's good run of form to the end of the season continued in their final match, at home to Werder Bremen, where they won 2-1.

That run has seen them enter our top 20 once more and, rather more importantly, has sealed a top-four finish and Champions League football for next season.

They ended the Bundesliga campaign one point above Wolfsburg in fifth, with Heung-Min Son scoring the all-important winner at the weekend.

18. Athletic Bilbao

4 of 21

Last week: 17

Differential: -1

Athletic Bilbao have seen off the challenge of both Sevilla and Real Sociedad for a top-four finish in recent weeks, with the latter only managing a 1-1 draw in Bilbao this weekend.

Iker Muniain found the net again to prevent the defeat, with Athletic now having a nine-point gap between themselves and fifth going into the final day.

17. Zenit

5 of 21

Last week: 15

Differential: -2

Zenit were top going into their penultimate Russian Premier League match, facing Dinamo Moscow at home.

The league leaders went ahead early on but conceded before half-time and then three times in the second half, trailing 4-1 by the 70th minute. Zenit pulled one back, but shortly before the 90th minute a crowd of home fans entered the pitch, punching Dinamo captain Vladimir Granat and causing the game to be abandoned.

Zenit have dropped to second in the league as a result of that fixture not being completed.

16. CSKA Moscow

6 of 21

Last week: 18

Differential: +2

CSKA Moscow, meanwhile, took full advantage of Zenit's nonsense to move to the top of the Premier League with a ninth straight victory.

They beat Tom Tomsk 2-0, with Seydou Doumbia scoring late on to add to an earlier own goal in CSKA's favour.

They are now top by one point, having played a game more than Zenit, with one match to play.

15. Everton

7 of 21

Last week: 16

Differential: +1

Everton rounded off an impressive season with their best-ever points tally and a fifth-place finish in the Premier League.

Their last match was a 2-0 win away to Hull City, with James McCarthy and Romelu Lukaku on the scoresheet.

Everton end the season seven points off the Champions League places.

14. Benfica

8 of 21

Last week: 14

Differential: —

Benfica ended their domestic season with a 2-1 defeat at Porto, not that they will care having already wrapped up the title beforehand.

It was just their second domestic loss of the season, and they finish seven points clear at the top.

Enzo Perez scored a penalty for their last league goal of the season; attention now turns to their Europa League final.

13. Monaco

9 of 21

Last week: 13

Differential: —

AS Monaco have enjoyed a successful return to Ligue 1 football and won again at the weekend, cementing their second-place relative triumph.

Though they trail leaders PSG by some distance, it's still been a tremendous campaign for the principality club who will no doubt look to spend and grow again in summer.

Nabil Dirar scored their late winner at relegated Valenciennes.

12. Roma

10 of 21

Last week: 11

Differential: -1

AS Roma had the chance to put a bit of a seal on their great season as they faced league winners Juventus in Serie A at the weekend.

Unfortunately they suffered a second successive defeat, losing 1-0 at home to the top side, their fourth loss of the season.

Roma will end the year in second place.

11. PSG

11 of 21

Last week: 12

Differential: +1

PSG ran out impressive 3-1 winners over third-placed Lille at the weekend, storming into a 3-0 lead after the home side went down to 10 men.

Marquinhos, Lucas Moura and Blaise Matuidi notched the goals before Lille's late consolation.

With one game to play, they are top by seven points, having already won Ligue 1.

10. Chelsea

12 of 21

Last week: 10

Differential: —

Chelsea wrapped up their Premier League campaign with a 2-1 win at Cardiff City.

After falling behind to the relegated club early on, Andre Schurrle and Fernando Torres scored in quick succession late in the second half.

Chelsea end the season in third place, the same as last season, having scored four fewer goals but winning three more games.

9. Real Madrid

13 of 21

Last week: 2

Differential: -7

Real Madrid's La Liga title challenge has collapsed entirely over the past three games, with two draws being followed up by this weekend's 2-0 defeat at Celta Vigo.

A win would have put Real second, in with a chance of winning the league if they were victorious on the last day and Barcelona beat Atletico Madrid.

Instead, they are third, out of the title race now and turning their attentions to the Champions League final.

8. Arsenal

14 of 21

Last week: 9

Differential: +1

Arsenal's good run at the end of the season sees them comfortably finish in the top four in the end.

Their last game of the season was a 2-0 win to relegate Norwich City, with Aaron Ramsey and Carl Jenkinson on the scoresheet.

They end the season seven points off the top.

7. Liverpool

15 of 21

Last week: 8

Differential: +1

Liverpool lost out on the Premier League title on the final day, though in reality they lost their grip on it in earlier games against Crystal Palace and Chelsea.

The Reds came from behind to beat Newcastle United 2-1 at home on the final day, with Daniel Agger and Daniel Sturridge both scoring in the space of two minutes before Newcastle had two men sent off.

Liverpool end the season in second place.

6. Atletico Madrid

16 of 21

Last week: 3

Differential: -3

Atletico Madrid are almost limping over the finish line in La Liga, losing and drawing their last two games when a win in either would have wrapped up the title by now.

They drew 1-1 at home to Malaga at the weekend, with Toby Alderweireld scoring the equaliser with 15 minutes to play.

Atleti face Barcelona on the final day; avoiding defeat will win them the league title.

5. Barcelona

17 of 21

Last week: 5

Differential: —

Barcelona, of course, face Atletico knowing they need to win the game to win the league.

They were held to a 0-0 draw at the weekend by lowly Elche, though as it turned out it was enough to grant them a last-day chance to win the title.

Barcelona's next goal in the league will be their 100th of the season.

4. Borussia Dortmund

18 of 21

Last week: 7

Differential: +3

Borussia Dortmund signed off their Bundesliga season with a 4-0 win against Hertha Berlin, with Robert Lewandowski scoring twice on his final league game for the club.

The Polish striker ends the season as the league's top scorer but now heads to Bayern Munich in the summer on a free transfer.

BVB end in second place, 19 points behind the winners.

3. Manchester City

19 of 21

Last week: 6

Differential: +3

Manchester City wrapped up their second Premier League title in three years with a composed and confident 2-0 win at home to West Ham United.

Samir Nasri and Vincent Kompany scored either side of half-time to ensure there would be no late dramatics in the title race.

City win the league by two points, ahead of Liverpool.

2. Bayern Munich

20 of 21

Last week: 4

Differential: +2

After a bit of a blip after sealing the title, Bayern have finished strongly with a four-match winning run to end the season.

They beat Stuttgart 1-0 in their final match, with Claudio Pizarro scoring a last-minute winner before he departs the club.

Bayern win the league by a clear 19 points.

1. Juventus

21 of 21

Last week: 1

Differential: —

No change at the top this week as Serie A title winners Juventus picked up a late 1-0 win over second-place AS Roma.

Dani Osvaldo scored the winning goal in the 90th minute to ensure Juve's superiority over the rest of the league.

With one game to play, Juve are on 99 points, 14 clear of Roma.
