Javier Pastore and 20 Forgotten World Footballers
Javier Pastore's solo golazo on Wednesday night reminded millions of fans he still exists. If you're a Paris Saint-Germain follower or world football enthusiast, this might sound strange, but so sporadic are his appearances, many had forgotten he plays in the French capital.
That got us thinking: Who else is still out there, quietly plying their trade away from the spotlight, seemingly forgotten by the fans?
We've listed 20, but there are probably plenty more. Add to the conversation in the comments if you've got your own suggestions.
This list does not include free agents, so the likes of David Bentley and Afonso Alves are not featured. All statistics are from ESPN FC bios.
Javier Pastore, Paris Saint-Germain
1 of 20
Pastore popped up in the 93rd minute of Paris Saint-Germain's Champions League quarter-final against Chelsea and scored a stunning solo goal.
Bar his goal against Barcelona at the same stage last season, and he's done very little to justify the gargantuan fee spent to lure him from Palermo.
He usually doesn't get a sniff due to Marco Verratti.
Park Chu-Young, Arsenal
2 of 20
Park Chu-Young swapped Monaco for Arsenal in 2011, but he has so far only made one measly appearance.
He's been out on loan to Celta Vigo and Watford in the meantime but has barely troubled the scoresheet and risks forfeiting his place in South Korea's starting XI as a result.
Some Gunners fans probably forgot he's still on their books.
Shay Given, Aston Villa
3 of 20
Shay Given has been frozen out of the Aston Villa first team due to his huge wage packet, and Paul Lambert prefers to stick Jed Steer on the bench instead.
Given was awarded one chance to impress last season in the Capital One Cup but failed to deal with the aerial bombardment Bradford City generated.
He's been on loan at Middlesbrough this season.
Tony Hibbert, Everton
4 of 20
Tony Hibbert joined Everton in 1991 and stands as the club's longest-serving player.
There will be several out there who will have thought he'd retired after David Moyes departed given he's made just a single four-minute substitute appearance in the Premier League season, but he's still alive and kicking.
In truth, he's really not a Roberto Martinez player, is he?
Alexander Hleb, Konyaspor
5 of 20
Alexander Hleb: Arsenal playmaker, Barcelona Champions League player...new Konyaspor arrival.
Since failing to truly settle at the Camp Nou, he's been all over the place, taking in loans at Birmingham City and Wolfsburg in addition to short spells at Krylia Sovetov Samara and BATE Borisov.
He was once a genius on the ball but often carried the attitude that too much must revolve around him.
Hilario, Chelsea
6 of 20
Over the course of an eight-year Chelsea career, Hilario has made just 20 total appearances for the first team.
He's been a backup option the entire time, stuck behind Petr Cech and a plethora of second-choice goalkeepers the Blues have employed.
His contract is up at the end of the season, and he turns 39 later this year.
Florent Sinama-Pongolle, Rostov
7 of 20
Florent Sinama-Pongolle was signed up by Liverpool after some impressive youth tournament showings but never lived up to the hype surrounding his name.
After going back to Ligue 1 with Le Havre for two seasons, his name just sort of...dropped away; but his record shows he's bounced around for years, and he's now plying his trade in the Russian Premier League with Rostov.
Diomansy Kamara, Eskisehirspor
8 of 20
Premier League stalwart Diomansy Kamara, 33, is still plugging away with Eskisehirspor in Turkish football.
The striker took in spells at Fulham, West Bromwich Albion and Portsmouth, was loaned to Celtic for a short period and tried his hand with Leicester City, too.
Carlo Nash, Norwich City
9 of 20
Carlo Nash hasn't played a game for three years, but he's not complaining about it.
At 40 years of age, he's fully accepted his role as an experienced backup goalkeeper, but then again, he never really played too much in his prime.
He's clocked 276 total appearances since 1996. For context, Iker Muniain, 21, has 226 to his name.
Jonathan Forte, Southampton
10 of 20
Jonathan Forte is somehow still on the Southampton's books despite making only 15 appearances for the club.
He joined the club with Nigel Adkins as a former Scunthorpe man, but the Saints quickly began splashing the cash and ended up with a far more attractive option: Rickie Lambert.
Forte barely plays for the U-21 side, doesn't go out on loan and is essentially redefining the phrase "stealing a living" so commonly thrown around in football.
Stuart Taylor, Reading
11 of 20
If you thought Nash's record was questionable, Stuart Taylor will force you to reconsider your stance.
The 33-year-old has made a career out of being a Premier League backup/emergency loan specialist, and he is yet to clock up 100 senior appearances despite debuting in 1999.
The maddening part is, he's a really dependable goalkeeper who could start 38 games.
Luke Young, Queens Park Rangers
12 of 20
Harry Redknapp has utilised Danny Simpson at right-back this season as Queens Park Rangers push for promotion from the Championship. If he's unavailable, Nedum Onuoha steps in.
That leaves Luke Young completely out in the cold, and he wasn't even registered for the first-team squad this February after failing to recover from an injury.
He won't make a single league appearance this season.
Sidney Govou, Monts D'Or Azergues
13 of 20
In January 2014, Sidney Govou signed a deal to play for French fourth-division side Monts D'Or Azergues.
You may remember him as an electric right-winger/striker plying his trade for Lyon three or four years ago, and after an ill-fated move to Greece, his career has been going the wrong way.
Eric Djemba-Djemba, St. Mirren
14 of 20
Eric Djemba-Djemba: so good they named him twice.
At least, that's what exasperated fans would joke after watching yet another shocking performance from the Cameroonian, who perpetually looked like a fish out of water.
He's truly done the rounds, playing in England, Denmark, Israel, Qatar and even Serbia, and he has now settled down to play for St. Mirren in the SPL.
Pascal Feindouno, Lausanne-Sport
15 of 20
Pascal Feindouno, 33, hasn't seen his career pan out the way many thought it would.
He was a strong, quick presence in Ligue 1 for years with Bordeaux and Saint-Etienne, but he moved to Qatar in 2008 and never really returned to top form.
He's been bouncing around for several years now and is currently on the books for Lausanne-Sport—hardly the desired end for a true 2006 Africa Cup of Nations star.
Ryan Babel, Kasimpasa
16 of 20
Ryan Babel is still only 27 years of age, believe it or not.
The former Liverpool cult hero and speedster broke onto the scene early with Ajax and moved to Anfield when he was very young, but he never quite lived up to the expectations.
After a spell at Hoffenheim, he moved back to Ajax, and he has been with Turkish Super Lig club Kasimpasa since 2013.
Jason Koumas, Tranmere Rovers
17 of 20
Jason Koumas retired in 2011 after being released by Wigan Athletic, but he trained with Tranmere Rovers last summer and did enough to earn a deal.
He's now back in the swing of things at age 34 and has even managed to score four goals this season. With the club fighting relegation to League Two, he could do with a couple more.
Faryd Mondragon, Deportivo Cali
18 of 20
You may remember Faryd Mondragon as one of the "golden generation" Colombia produced in the 1990s, and along with Mario Yepes, they're the only two who remain in the game.
The 42-year goalkeeper is spending his final years in sport with his first-ever side, Deportivo Cali, in the Colombian First Division.
Djibril Cisse, Bastia
19 of 20
Djibril Cisse epitomises the term "journeyman striker," having played for 10 different clubs by age 31.
He was with Kuban Krasnodar last season and played in the Europa League, but this year, he returned to his French roots and signed for Bastia.
He's made 10 appearances for his new club but only scored a single goal so far.
David Bellion, Bordeaux
20 of 20
David Bellion managed to smuggle his way onto Manchester United's books for three years before being sent back to Ligue 1 with Nice.
He perpetually disappointed and proved he was nowhere near the top-tier player Sir Alex Ferguson had hoped for. He has really struggled to score goals since.
Somehow, he's still on Bordeaux's payroll.
