Rangers Fans Launch Another Petition Against the 'Anti-Rangers' BBC

Andy MuirheadJun 5, 2009

With the season at an end, and the fans twiddling their thumbs waiting for pre-season to start or trying  to avoid helping out the missus with her shopping bags, they have a lot of time on their hands to think.

And it is usually one side of the Old Firm that come up with new fan-dangled ideas or should I say conspiracy theories. As we reported earlier in the year a Rangers supporters group calling themselves Vanguard Bears—who claim to defend our Rangers football club, its culture and heritage from the political and sectarian agenda being orchestrated within Scotland—despite this supposed high and mighty, holier than thou statement, they are little more than a forum who provide a voice piece for bigots and people calling themselves fans.

Anyway this site claims once again, that the BBC have an anti-Rangers agenda and that a group calling themselves ‘Rangers for Equality’ has called on fellow Rangers fans to boycott the Licence fee that is paid out to the BBC and to sign another e-petition. Vanguard Bears have urged their members and fellow Rangers fans to sign the petition and so therefore endorse all the points, the same group who held a demonstration outside the BBC Scotland HQ some time ago to protest the vendetta the organisation was conducting on the quintessential British club.

Statement:

"

BBC Scotland has continually ignored pleas from Rangers fans for balance and impartiality when reporting on Rangers F.C or Rangers fans. BBC Scotland has not only continued to report without balance or impartiality but they even ignored several previous protests and petitions from Rangers fans.

Recently BBC Scotland totally ignored the build up to the Rangers V St Mirren semi-final at Hampden, not one mention on its Friday or Saturday news bulletins before the game. Not a big deal you might say? When contacted by numerous Rangers fans the BBC sent the following response:

“Thanks for your e-mail. Your comments were passed to the Editor, who has asked that I forward his response as follows: “Thank you for getting in touch. I apologise sincerely for this oversight. You are quite right to complain about the omission of this important football semi-final match between, StMirren and Rangers, in the Homecoming Scottish Cup. We can offer no excuses for our failure not to carry a preview report. I have spoken to the producer and he has apologised to me for this error. I hope it is one that will not be repeated.”
Thanks once again for taking the time to contact us.

Regards Claire Jordan BBC Complaints”

Fast forward to the cup final and Rangers complete the double and what happens on the Monday? Andy Murray & Tommy Burns’s tribute lead the way but NO MENTION of the double winners or Falkirk. Again you might say “it’s not that big a deal” but when you look at the following then you see a pattern developing with one thing in common, Rangers F.C and Rangers fans either ignored or featured prominently when the story is in a negative light.

*A South Park type Joke cartoon of Neil Lennon is portrayed as a death threat by the BBC, within hours of this report Follow Follow website is shut down. Actual death threats are posted regarding Nacho Novo on Celtic fans website yet the BBC ignores these?

*A Video of 2 Celtic players singing i*a songs surfaces but the BBC refuses to show it because the footage is not clear and it appears on youtube. Rangers are reported to UEFA and the BBC is happy to show a youtube video as evidence

*Last year when the “famine song” controversy broke the BBC used karaoke type reporting so everyone knew the words being sung. A first of it’s kind, shortly after they don’t use the same method to when Celtic fans sing i*a songs at Motherwell.

*Rangers were the first Scottish club to qualify for the last 16 of the UEFA Champions League, the following day this didn’t even warrant a mention on BBC news

*The BBC broke the famine story from “Journalist” Phil Mac Ghiolla Bhain, who himself boasted on live radio of his BBC contacts. Research in Mr Mac Ghiolla Bhain’s background shows us he’s an i*a sympathiser, a Glasgow born self-confessed Celtic fanatic and a complete fantasist.

We could go with this list but most Rangers fans have heard them all before.

We at Rangers for Equality have written to Mark Thompson(Director General) and have still as yet to receive any response, we feel now is the time for the biggest travelling support in the world to show our displeasure. If this petition doesn’t achieve its aim then the plans are in place for more protests, both at Pacific Quay and the London HQ.

"

The Petition ends with another statement:

"

We the undersigned call on the BBC who as an institution reliant on the licence fees of the General Public carry out its duty to be impartial and report all news, sport and current affairs items fairly and with complete impartiality. We also request that senior management agree to our request for a formal meeting to hear and discuss our grievances.

Until such times the above is carried out, we ask ALL Rangers fans to boycott paying the BBC TV Licence fee. If we fund it, we should be treated as fairly as the next person.

"

At the moment the petition has 389 signatures, but it will be an idea to find out how many of these fans are actually going to refuse to pay their licence fee, especially with the threat of a £1000 fine.
