Premier League Results: Analysis for Man United vs. Tottenham and All Matches

Michael CummingsJan 1, 2014

The Premier League's congested fixture list rolled on with another full slate of matches on New Year's Day.

Leaders Arsenal left it late against Cardiff, who had a potential new manager watching on from the stands. Manchester City, meanwhile, won again to maintain the pace.

In the following slides, we take a closer look at all the matches.

Manchester United 1-2 Tottenham Hotspur

1 of 10

Tottenham Hotspur continued their fine run under new manager Tim Sherwood with a 2-1 victory at Manchester United on New Year's Day.

Emmanuel Adebayor scored again, and Christian Eriksen tallied the winner for the Spurs, who won for the second consecutive season at Old Trafford. Danny Welbeck pulled one back for United in the second half.

The win sent the Spurs up to sixth place with 37 points, three ahead of United. Since Sherwood took over from the sacked Andre Villas-Boas in December, Tottenham have won three times and drawn once in four league matches.

United, who lost for the fourth time this season at Old Trafford, are in seventh with 34 points. The result ended a four-match winning streak in the league for United under manager David Moyes.

Tottenham went ahead in the 34th minute. Eriksen held up play on the right and crossed for Adebayor, who directed a well-taken header past David de Gea at the far post.

It was Adebayor's fourth goal in five matches since returning to the side after the managerial change in December. The Togolese striker has scored in each of his last three league appearances at Old Trafford.

The visitors made it 2-0 on the counter in the 66th minute. Lennon crossed for Eriksen from the right, and though the ball was deflected en route, Eriksen reacted quickly to stoop and head past de Gea for a 2-0 lead.

United pulled one back a minute later as Welbeck timed his run perfectly along Tottenham's back line and latched onto Adnan Januzaj's pass before finishing coolly.

Arsenal 2-0 Cardiff City

2 of 10

Nicklas Bendtner and Theo Walcott scored late goals as Arsenal labored to a 2-0 win at home against Cardiff City. The win kept Arsenal one point clear atop the table.

Arsenal played without four first-choice players in Mesut Ozil, Aaron Ramsey, Olivier Giroud and Kieran Gibbs. Even so, the Gunners dominated possession and registered 28 shots.

But it took until the 88th minute for the hosts to find the breakthrough as Bendtner (a second-half substitute) slammed in the rebound after Cardiff keeper David Marshall had saved Bacary Sagna's header.

Walcott added the second in stoppage time, finishing with a measured chip following Jack Wilshere's clever flicked pass.

The win took Arsenal to 45 points. The Gunners lead Manchester City by one point atop the table. Cardiff City are 17th, one point and one place clear of the relegation zone.

Cardiff owner Vincent Tan watched the game with former Manchester United star Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, who is set to be named the club's next manager, per BBC Sport.
